Just got the new Lexus GX550 luxury plus. I can’t figure out how to disable adaptive cruise control.

First, congratulations on your beautiful truck.

There's a feature in the driver assistance module in the Lexus menu that turns on proactive driver assistance. That turns off the most annoying features of the safety suite.

I would walk you through it here, but these videos are about as good as I've seen any company put out, and they're annotated with chapters.

I think if you press the upper right button on the right side of the steering wheel once, then again when the prompt comes up on the dash. This turns it off and allows regular cruise control.

in other words....one version of cruise control will always be on and "ready" to activate. By pressing the upper right button on the steering wheel, you can choose if it's adaptive or standard cruise control

Correct, after selecting which one you want as noted above, then you press the upper left most button on the right hand side of the wheel to activate and deactivate. When you press the button it will use the speed you are at as the cruise speed. The speed can be toggled up or down by pressing the up down arrows (increase/decrease) also on the right side of the wheel. After playing with them a bit one at a time I got comfortable with what they do. The adaptive cruise is nice as it works like regular cruise until you approach a slower car in front of you. There is a toggle on the lower right side to set the distance you want to maintain between you and the car in front of you. Three horizontal bars is the most. I like that setting.

I love my truck, but the user interface for Adaptive Control is terrible. The only thing worse is the climate control (or actual total lack of climate control).

Follow directions posted above, just know that it is not intuitive and you will forget how to use it if you don't use it frequently. My wife won't even attempt to use it.......

Watch the 2:41 video referenced above. It is the best info I have found.

Yes. Once you get used to it, it’s a breeze. Right side, upper right button pressed once is adaptive cruise. Same button, a second press, and all distance control radar is disabled. Accelerate to desired speed, press upper left button to set it.
The center of this cluster adjusts speed up or down one mile per hour each press. Upper button is resume and center button cancels cruise without needing to cancel by braking.
One thing I had to get used to was placement of the cancel button. Having driven Toyotas for 32 years, I was used to pulling forward on the stalk lever to cancel cruise. The GX had to relocate cancel because of the shifting paddles. I tended to feel the paddle, thinking it was cancel out of habit. Silly me…

Just curious if people find the adaptive cruise annoying at all? I had a 2018 Tundra with pretty archaic adaptive cruise ,and I find this one to be very good on longer trips.

I love this version of adaptive cruise. In SoCal I find the ability to manage stop and go traffic particularly useful. It's also great at easing my driver fatigue on longer open stretches of road.

I'm taking the GX on a road trip this weekend, and i'm really looking forward to letting it the cruise do its thing.

Adaptive cruise control, in conjunction with the other safety systems are quite nifty in stop and go traffic situations, such as traffic jams. With it engaged you can negotiate your way through with less stress. It will follow the vehicle ahead, moving when they move, and the self braking system won’t let you rear end them.

I like and use the active cruise control on the GX550. I find it useful and also reduces stress levels. Use it all the time except when I need to be more alert or have aggressive drivers on the left lane tailing us as the reaction time to reaccelerate is not that fast and cars behind start getting impatient or flash their lights..

I am happy Lexus did not install the touch capacitive controls on the steering buttons. I had a loaner RX450+ and although the adaptive cruise works just like the GX550, to change settings such as cancel or to change speed is a pain. With the capacitive controls, you have to tap the button on the steering to activate cruise control and a second time to change speed, cancel etc. It is also very distracting as you need to take a look at the HUD to confirm changes.

The other thing is that you need sufficient horsepower to really enjoy adaptive cruise control. If the vehicle does not have enough power or torque, it will feel sluggish or slow.
