Does anyone find the Sports Luxury ride to be harsh/hard? (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

I’m interested in hearing what other owners think about the ride quality of the Sports Luxury model, particularly those based in Australia.

I’ve had my Sports Luxury for 11 months and have driven about 15,000 km (9,300 miles), mostly on highways and around town. I’ve taken it on the occasional dirt road, but with 22-inch wheels and a 100 mm (4-inch) sidewall, confidence isn’t exactly high.

To me, the ride feels exceptionally harsh and firm—it transmits every small bump and rut in the road. Switching to the Comfort suspension setting makes very little difference. I’ve experimented with tire pressures, currently running 40 PSI all around, and have tried as low as 34 PSI, but again, there’s hardly any improvement.

I’m considering fitting a set of Overtrail wheels with Toyo tires to see if the extra sidewall helps. However, another owner mentioned that the Overtrail OEM tires produce a lot of road noise.

Here in Australia, replacement tire options are quite limited. For the Sports Luxury, it’s basically the OEM replacement or Yokohama’s SUV variant (Geolandar X-CV G057).

To annoy myself, I test drove a LX500d F sports, the ride was so compliant and that was despite being on a relatively low profile tire.

While I've not ridden in that particular model, I would certainly expect it to have the harshest ride of the GXs. 22s and a sport suspension would be for performance over ride all day long.

I would think going to the 18s with the right tires would help. Road noise is subjective. My OT is the quietest vehicle I own.

Thanks Mate, I figure it can't hurt to try a set of O/Ts 18'" wheels tires.

Sorry to hear that. Have you had the tires Road Force Balanced? Even one tire out of spec makes a world of difference. Also 40psi way too high pressure in those tires. Drop it down to 33/34psi and get them balanced

I own a Luxury+, which I believe is the US equivalent to your Sports Luxury, and I also bought Genuine 18 inch Overtrail wheels with stock Toyos. What vehicles are you comparing the ride against?

Is there any reason you choose to run 40psi? The factory spec on the 22s is 33psi and IMO tire pressure makes a big difference to ride quality on the 22s.

Also, I don't think the factory Toyo 18 inch tires are loud at all, at least in the first 1000 miles I've run them. They're pretty whisper quiet for AT tires and I can only hear them if I'm trying to listen for them.

Yes, the 22s are quite firm over sharp bumps, and yes the 18 inch wheels do help somewhat. But I live somewhere the roads are quite smooth, so the 22s weren't awful, and I don't think the 18s really improved the ride a huge amount. In my experience, the 22s are only harsh when driving over rough pavement at low speeds - once you're at motorway speeds, it's no different.

I think that the rough ride is really just the nature of the vehicle. I ordered a Premium+ for my wife. When it showed up, I was completely surprised out how rough the ride was compared to her 2018 Land Cruiser. Fortunately, she said that she can't tell the difference.
