Anyone know why the GX doesn't seem to coast at low speeds at all. Its like the truck is constantly braking - I have the auto brake safety thing disabled.

I don't think its even engine braking from downshifts, although it could be. It's pretty annoying, i've never driven a vehicle that i have to baby the throttle going 15 mph in a neighborhood or something.

That’s how they drive. You can try a transmission reset but it’ll still do it

Pretty sure the torque converter lock-up stays locked during deceleration, thus using the engine to help the brakes slow down this elephant.

Personally, I like it. It decelerates like all the manual transmission vehicles I've owned and feels totally normal to me. If you don't drive manuals, then I can see how it feels weird.

Drop it into neutral and it will coast forever. I do this on long highway off ramps, otherwise I'm constantly having to shovel fuel on the fire to keep it going.

Don't remember why but my Mercedes SUV specifically states not the coast vehicle in neutral.
I could be totally wrong here but I would suggest checking coasting in neutral in the GX

It's not going to disintegrate the transmission, but it is going to put more wear and tear on the clutch packs than normal. Also, coasting in neutral means the injectors have to keep supplying fuel to keep the engine at idle speed. When the throttle is fully released while in gear, the engine completely shuts down all fuel to the engine which results in, basically, infinite fuel economy until the car comes almost to a halt.

Somebody capable of higher math than me can figure out whether coasting in neutral actually saves any gas in a modern engine. I do know that the tiny amount of gas you'll save will probably never make up for changing your brake pads earlier due to the absence of engine braking.

The mileage meter very obviously goes up when coasting in neutral. I'm certainly no hyper-miler by any stretch of the imagination, but I've noticed that exiting the highway at 80 mph and dropping it into N and coasting for 3/4 mile to the stop light will earn you a couple extra tenths on the mpg indicator. I don't drop it back into drive until stopped.

I didn't realize the injectors stop injecting while coasting in gear.

I had the same issue when I first got the GX. It seems to be much better after 1~2k miles. Coasting just like a normal car with automatic transmission now at 16k miles

You have auto breaking or whatever it is called on. There is a switch on the screen. My lexus tech showed it to me, turned it off, and said everyone complains about it. It actually is pretty smart but it senses when you should be stopping and breaks. I bet most of the people bitching about the transmission never read the manual and figured out how to turn this off.

Turn off PDA Proactive Driving Assist.

Proactive Driving Assist uses the vehicle's forward-facing camera and radar to monitor the roadway and detect obstacles or curves ahead. The system then reacts to a potentially hazardous situation by providing gentle braking and light steering inputs to keep the vehicle under control. Toyota says the result is a safer and more confidence-inspiring drive.

So as you are coming up to a stop sign and take your foot off the gas the car senses this, realizes you are probably going to be slowing down and does it for you. If you are following another car and that car slows down the system slows you down, especially when you take your foot off the gas. It feels a lot like the braking on electric cars that use the brakes to help recharge the battery, but it does it automatically. It isn't a bad thing, but it isn't the same as every other car we grew up driving. So people who don't realize it come on and complain that their transmission is broken. Now some people may have issues with their transmission, I don't, so I can't confirm nor deny, but try shutting it off and see the difference.

Welp, I may have learned something new.

I turned off PDA the day I bought the GX. I just used the general driving assist screen and turned the whole PDA system off. Or so I thought.

I had some errands to run this morning, so I went into the settings screen where there are also PDA driving assist settings. There were some specific switches, including one called deceleration assist. All the switches were on. So, I only turned off the deceleration switch. I double checked the overall PDA switch was still off in the other driving assist screen.

It certainly felt like the coasting was noticeably improved in the speed range I was driving (under 55). Now I might have been sensory biased because I was paying close attention. When I have time I may turn it on and off to see if there is a real difference.

But I agree, it is worth turning off at least that deceleration assist button and give it a try.

I accidentally turned this feature on the other day, while scrolling thru the menu. IT DROVE ME NUTS!!!! I didn't realize I had activated it and could not figure out what was going on. I finally found the setting(after a month), turned it off and had instant relief. I think my blood pressure dropped when driving, after it was deactivated. I remembered that the salesman had turned it off, before I left the parking lot, when I purchased the vehicle.

Same. The first thing the tech delivery guy did was go in there and disable it and tell me that everyone hated that feature and they always disable it at delivery.

Go To Page 257 of the Owner's Manual, PDA (Proactive driving assist). On Page 258, Figure 4-5, Using the driving support systems, read up on "Deceleration Assist (DA)" and other Driver Assist settings you can find.
The car is " not designed to drive itself" but it will try.
