Being in the second month of GX (V6 landcruiser) ownership I’ve found all kinds of bits and pieces to install to optimize its aesthetics.
One of the most recent discoveries I made was that all of my hinges (doors and hatch) are STARK NAKED! And I realized that the only decent thing to do was to cover them with black plastic.
Plastic hinge covers were a very inexpensive buy, and gave those unsightly hinges a nice finished appearance.
Now they certainly look better.. but there are some in this forum who have referenced the possibility that these hinge covers may retain water, and in so doing actually place our hinges at higher risk of corrosion, instead of protecting them from this long term inevitability.
But I think over the next decade of ownership, the greater issue is that covering up the hinges with plastic bits will lead to us forgetting that they’re even there.
Which means they won’t be lubricated - ever… (Out of site hinges are out of mind)..
Which leads me to my thought.. if I am going cover up my hinges with handsome black plastic, I’m going to make it a point that once a year I’ll take all those little plastic trim pieces off, lubricate those hinges.. and then put them back before anyone notices they were missing.
