Durango CO
Starting my build thead, even though I don't actually have the rig yet. I'm buying it at the Alburturkey stealer as there's not one in Durango. I was on the list with ABQ, Colorado Springs, and Santa Fe since January. ABQ has come through with:

1751405109620-png.12927

The theme:

Talon will be my daily when the weather is not appropriate for Vlad, or I need to transport more stuff. He will be the tow-vehicle / adventure-companion for Raptor, my 2022 Off-Grid Trailers Pando 3.0 camper. He will replace Dwanda, my 2017 Tacoma TRD Off-Road which has served us very well to-date... but I'm sick and tired of the anemic mini-van engine and horrific transmission.

Vlad:

Dwanda + Raptor:
20250503_173635245_ios-jpeg.12935

This is the first new car I've bought since the Tacoma. I don't generally like modern cars. But I need at least one.

If I spend this kind of money, I'm going to make it "mine" right, up front, vs slowly as I did with Dwanda.... With that rig I didn't really know what I wanted or how I'd really use an overland-style rig. Now that I've been in Durango for 3+ years I am pretty clear on what adventures we really like, and what I don't care for: Getting pretty much anywhere in the SW Colorado mountains, without having to do serious rock crawling. Almost always with Raptor attached, but sometimes without.

It will be the ski-rig in the winter. My fiancé's Rav4 hybrid will be our long-road-trip car.

The Options:

  • Wireless phone charger
  • 10.7-in color Head-Up Display
  • Tonneau cover
  • Cool box
  • Door Edge Trim
  • Illuminated Door Sills
  • Key Gloves
  • Black Emblem Overlays
  • All Weather Cargo Mat

Build plan:

  • Victory 4x4 "Blitz" Front Bumper (ordered)
  • Baja Designs S8 20" LED Light Bar (ordered)
  • 10k Winch (either Warn or Smittybilt; haven't decided yet)
  • Victory4x4 "Strike" Rear Bumper (ordered)
  • Victory4x4 Rear Window MOLLE Panel (2x) (ordered)
  • Wescott Designs Rock Sliders (ordered)
  • Spidertrax 1" Wheel Spacers (ordered)
  • Wolfbox G900 Rear View Mirror with front/rear cameras. Crossing my fingers I can figure out how to mount it in place of OE mirror as I did on the Tacoma. Raptor has a Wolfbox rear camera mounted on it's bumper that I switch to when I connect the trailer. I will make this work on the GX, hell or high water. (purchased)
  • Husky Liners Front & Second Seat Floor Liners (ordered)
  • LaIIker 2 PCs Seat Back Protective Pad (ordered)
  • I will get the front clip clear PPF'd and the roof done in black (because I really wanted the black roof).
  • I will debadge it. We don't need no stinkin' badges!

Debatable/For Later:

  • VF Tuner ECU/TCU Tune. Sounds intriguing and Good. And I like moar power.
  • Cat-back exhaust. I don't care about the sound, but I am curious about some notes I read that the TRD exhaust gives better clearance?
  • A low-profile, QUIET, roof rack. Perhaps the Wescott Designs one. There's not a ton of need for stuff on the roof, except paddle boards.
  • Rear molle shelf. I suspect the 2 Rear Window panels will be sufficient for the crap I like to keep strapped to the insides of the Tacoma's topper.
  • Better tires. I'm not convinced the stock tires are as good as my K02s ore the newer K03s.
  • Victory4x4 swing out tire carrier. The Tacoma and Raptor have the exact same tire/wheel setup, so the Tacoma's spare would work as a spare on the trailer if needed. But with Talon, I'll really need a spare for the trailer. I've modified the trailer with a spare propane tank where OffGrid normally puts the spare tire mount. I'm thinking since the Victory4x4 tire carrier is easily removable, that might work well.

Hope y'all enjoy this adventure as much as I'm sure I will!

Sounds like it will be a nice truck!

I think you'll definitely want to change the stock Toyo AT3 tires - they are softer than normal AT3s and people are cutting them up on rocks.

I've looked into the Wolfbox and it doesn't seem to work well if mounted ON TOP of the original mirror - the straps that hold the Wolf to the mirror go right over the homelink garage door buttons so you have to shift the camera over to the left which interferes with the driver's sun visor and it looks terrible. I think the mirror-on-mirror setup is horrible anyway.

I haven't made much progress trying to figure out how to REPLACE the stock mirror with the Wolfbox unit. That would be ideal.

I've also seen forum discussions where people install the Toyota Land Cruiser rear view camera mirror but it's stupidly expensive. Have to look into that more.

Factory tires are not too bad but are soft and wore out for me around 30k :-(
I look forward to seeing what you do with the Wolfbox G900 Rear View Mirror - please post pics here, I'd like to do similar.

You might consider one of the sunglasses holders that fit in place of the roof "grab bar" handle. I did one on drivers side as I don't use that since it has a handle on the A pillar (seems a lot of place are making this kind of replacement glasses holder these days, was a 10 minute job to install).

Picked him up at Lexus Of ABQ yesterday. Drove back to Durango right after...

Excited to get the time to install the bumpers, winch, etc... But first I gotta get married.

Oh, and this arrived yesterday too. It was not my intention to color match, but luck happens.

Oh, and I renamed him.

Nobody else liked "Talon". And since I'm getting married this week and it's True Love, I had to go with Inigo.

If you don't get the connection, you've not lived.

First real mod: Nuked the running boards (my Westcott sliders haven't arrived yet).

Installed the CarTrimHome molle kit (Toyota LC250 Rear MOLLE Panel Organizer | 2024+ Cargo Gear). I had ordered the Victory4x4 version, but I liked the design of this one and it was less expensive, so I returned the Victory ones. Went in easy and does exactly what I wanted.

The Wolfbox 900 diashcam mirror is partially installed. The mirror adapter kit does fit but is slightly too high causing the front camera view to be occulded by the front sensor surround, and the top surrond panel won't go in. I found this adapter, from Bob's Mirrors which may do the trick; ordered:

While there, I also ordered: Dongar PRO Parking Mode Adapter

Which should make installing power for the camera super easy.

I'll pull the rear camera wiring asap, and figure out how to ensure I can also get the signal from the trailer camera as I did in the Tacoma.

Pretty pissed I'm already getting the infamous transmission clunk with only 400 miles on the rig.

I use the CarScanner app on the iPhone via a OBD bluetooth module. CarScanner doesn't support coding of the GX550 yet. Does anyone know of an iOS OBD app that DOES support coding the GX?

looks 10x better without the running boards. kind of the only way that the stock tire setup looks acceptable.

So stoked to watch this build.

I'm in CO (Castle Rock) and awaiting my vehicle. OT+ Atomic Silver/Chateau. Waited a long time for my color combo. Incognito was possibly first exterior choice,, GSM of Lexus took that specific allocation (only found out when I visited and saw it parked there much to my chagrin) and he owns it now. Good laugh on that one.

Should be in the LBC in a couple days , then awaiting rail and truck to Denver. It's coming with OEM rock rails which I will keep for now as my "weekend warrior" status moves up over time. RTT going on and possible ADGU unit in the back. Fridge, power and storage gear ordered already .

I'm headed up to Overland Expo West on Friday to go "shopping" and maybe get some expo deals ;)

Congrats again!

Congrats again!

Thanks!

Have the rear Victory4x4 Strike bumper mostly installed.

Victory's build quality seems great. However, I've found their installation instructions to be lacking. There's really only a single youtube video and it's missing some details. Thankfully getting through on the phone was fruitful and helpful.

They really need a document that identifies where each fastener goes. For example there are four 19mm nylon-nuts and it wasn't clear how they were used until I was almost done. In another case, there's a need to tap a bolt to the frame that's not covered in the video (and is very hard to reach).

Cutting the plastic was scary. I'm a bit nervous about the gqp the recommended cut line will leave. We'll see.

The only fitment problem so far is the welds on the top of my rear frame are apparently thicker than Toyota used to make and the rear brackets wouldn't fit. I had to file down the weld boogers a bit and then put some coverup paint on.

Do you have any more info on that (what looks like a) compressor in your trunk? Is this a stock part from Lexus or was this an aftermarket item? Apologies if it was mentioned earlier in your thread and I missed it.
It's the stock factory copressor that comes on 2025 OT and OT+ models.

Rear bumper install complete. Looks great.

The gap between the trim that I had to trim and the bumper is too big. Pisses me off that victory4x4 specifies a 5 1/2 inch cut when it really should be closer to 5 3/4.

I’ve ordered some edge trim of various sizes and flavors to see if I can fill that gap cleanly.

I also installed my 1 inch spacers on the rear wheels. I didn’t realize the kit didn’t come with four spacers so I’ve ordered another kit for the front.

I think this is just about the perfect amount of poke.

I will be putting different wheels and tires on at some point, but I decided I’m gonna utilize these tires through the end of the summer in the fall. Might as well get you out of the tires instead of just tossing them or try to sell.
