Hey guys and gals. I'm posting because I recently sold a pair of OT+ roof rails to a member on here. I was asking $300 as I've seen some on here sell for $350. Figured $300 was a solid price point and just had them collecting dust in my garage. He Counter offered with $250 shipped. I Counter offered with $250 plus shipping and that I would get him a quote for shipping within a few days. I ended up getting a shipping quote from UPS for around $52 with box and packing included. They measured and weighed it but said this was still just an estimate. I figured that's not a bad price at all for shipping from Houston to Illinois, and if there is a discrepancy, it wouldn't be too much. I get back to buyer and tell him $250+$52 give or take on estimate. He agrees and sends money through Venmo. In the next day, I rush after work to UPS to ship product but they now qoute me $165.xx for shipping, boxing and packaging. I tell them they qouted me $52 and understand that was an estimate and could accept a few dollars to $15-$20 dollar difference but not a $113 dollar price difference. They said I was given a wrong quote and the $165 price is cheapest it will cost to ship. I said no thank you as I haven't talked to buyer yet about the updated shipping cost and wouldn't know if he would agree to it. I decided to try FedEx since I had the roof rails ready to go. They qouted me $124 shipped, boxed and packaged to prevent damage. It was cheaper than UPS and I was tired from work and hauling ass to UPS and now FedEx so I said screw it, I want them gone at this point and they were close to closing and probably wouldn't get an answer in time from buyer. I figured I'll take the hit since I haven't talked to buyer about the increase in shipping and would let him know if he wants to help cover the extra shipping cost it would be great! If not, I understand. FedEx had a $100 insurance free of charge and assured me it would be packaged right to prevent damage. Product was literally like new. No scratches, dings or blemishes so I figured I didnt need to pay more for insurance since they assured me product would be protected and I was probably going to take a huge hit on shipping as is. Buyer reaches back and says he's willing to send $35 once rails arrive to help offset the extra shipping cost. Awesome! I was already expecting to take the full hit but I was greatful he was willing to help. Buyer received product and states it arrived scratched up. Still fully functional but scratched. He says he's hesitant to installing them. He said he's not planning to request a return, but if I think a partial refund or another form of compromise is reasonable, he's open to discussing it. I apologize for the whole situation as I tend to be honest and don't like screwing anyone over. I tell him that I had dropped them off at FedEx literally like new and that they told me they would package them up. I told him I would take the full hit on the extra shipping cost since I felt bad for him, but that's the best I could do as far as my end. Since I was now at $176 profit with the shipping hit. I did let him know I would talk to FedEx about this. I opened a claim with them, it's still pending. Figured we could split some of the $100 insurance between us to help each other out. But I honestly don't know if I win, will I receive the whole $100 or just partial due to rails still functioning and it's just scratched, no broken pieces. Heck, they could just deny the whole claim and not give me anything. Buyer decides to file a $150 dispute with venmo. I have until the 21st to proceed. I have never been in this situation before. I have never actually sold and shipped anything before so I don't know how to proceed with this. If he wins his claim that would put me at a $26 profit for roof rails in like new condition when they left my hands and he would get an extremely good deal for roof rails. I do understand his disappointment with receiving scratched rails but that was out of my control and like I said, I worked with him for me to take the hit on the extra shipping. At this point i might as well have just threw them in the trash or given them away for free and not been in this situation. I don't want to screw anyone over but I don't want to get screwed as well, as a $26 profit wouldn't even cover the gas i used on the GX to rush to UPS and FedEx
. I have seen some scratched rails sell on here for $200 plus shipping. Any advice or suggestions from this group? Sorry for the long post!
P.S. I did send him pics of rails before the purchase. I did let him know that they were dusty in pics and they had some dog hair.
