Should you call it a "rig" if its stock? (1 Viewer)

When does it become a "rig?"

  • When its stock

  • After you add some offroad lights

  • Once you do a collar lift, OE tires or any tire 33inch and less

  • A true lift with aftermarket suspension and 34s+

  • Lift, 35s+, rack, lighting, mole panels, spare wheel and carrier

  • None of the above

I have been an offroad enthusiast for a few years now... I have also built a couple trucks that I would call a "rig." But I have been hearing owners of GXs referring to their trucks as 'rigs' or "builds" even if its just barely modified. I also see it on YouTube videos from journalist reviewers... So made me wonder, what is the general consensus? When is it acceptable to refer to your GX as a "rig" or "build?"

My two cents:

Rig - A utility/purpose-built vehicle, usually body on frame, stock or modified.

Build - Mods that increase the utility of a vehicle. Suspension/portal lift, purpose-driven wheel/tire setup, roof rack, bumpers, lighting, snorkel, winches, etc.

There are a lot of GXs with some combination of preload collars/spacers, wheel/tire setup, roof rack, and/or tuxedo wrap. I have zero issues when a proud owner shares these light mods as a "build". If a journalist refers to this set of mods as a build, I'd assume they review mostly stock vehicles.

I feel something can be a "rig" when it has been modified for a purpose. Excluding lights all over the place for the sake of lights.
I wouldnt refer to a Silverado as a "rig."

Well my stock rig did a great job towing my trailer 9500 km's to Alaska and back. Did a little 4wheelin' along the way when we were unhitched. We went overland except for the ferry from Prince Rupert BC to Port Hardy, BC which we would highly recommend as it goes thru the Inside Passage.

Clearly there is a point when an offroad/overlanding enthusiast starts calling their vehicle a rig. just not sure when that is... As for why it matters? it doesnt... but just thought it was an interesting observation

You’re all wrong… this is a rig

Jokes aside. Don’t yuck someone’s yum just because it doesn’t meet your arbitrary yardstick for a build. Who cares.

Having worked in construction for almost three decades, to me, the word rig is synonymous with a “purpose built vehicle” to help you do a job. Such a Mechanic Rig, a paramedic rig, etc etc. I hate to give a nod to overlanders but a fully decked out overland vehicle would fit that description.
As for my truck, I simply call it Chruck! As in Chunky Truck.
