I’m looking at these wheels and really not doing anything to the suspension except maybe leveling the front. 285/75 R17 (~34s) on +35 offset wheels are generally what’s recommended if not modifying the stock suspension. what’s the biggest recommended tire size in diameter and width on the ZE40X which are available in a 17 +20 offset?

TIA

I was trying to get those wheels(ZE40X) in the 20 offset and pair them with 34x10.5. I thought they looked great and lightweight. However I had really difficult time finding them. Ended it up putting on Tacoma trd pro wheels 18x8.5 20 offset with 275/70r18 tires. Just a touch of poke beyond the fenders. Super happy with it. IMO 20mm offset with stock or sub 34” tires looks great, functional, no mods needed and spare fits.

Good to know 33’s fit. What model year do you have and are you running stock suspension?

2025 OT stock suspension.

I have ZE40X on my GX550, something that no one has mentioned when mounting these is that these are made for M12 studs. Your standard conical lug nuts can only get about 5 turns of engagement and the bore is too small to fit ET lug nuts. I will be installing either extended studs or machining my own custom lug nuts.. but just FYSA

Dang. I have these wheels on order (still 4 months out) and this is not something I considered at all. The bore is listed at 29mm at the wide end and 15mm on the narrow end for the lugs. On a 14mm stud, that 1mm difference is not much room to play with so I doubt we can find an ET lug nut that fits; having less than .5mm of material backing those extended threads would probably be pointless anyway.

That makes replacing the lug studs on all four corners the only option, which will definitely be a PIA to DIY. Please let us know if you find a suitable replacement for the OEM studs.

Ooof! Thanks for the heads up. I think that’s the deal breaker for me. I already have a Taco that I performed extensive “surgery” on. Don’t want to start on that slippery slope again.

Does this mean that ordering this is wrong?

Those are what I have ordered too, but compared to wheels that are designed for extended thread lugnuts, you will have to do some extra work for maximum strength and safety; you will need to replace all your wheel studs with slightly longer ones. The process is not that complicated but definitely tedious since you will have to remove all 4 calipers, all 4 rotors, press out 24 studs, and press in 24 new ones.

Question. What does that mean for your spare tire situation? Did you have to source another cheaper rim that accepts the new studs or are there lug nuts that work with the new studs and the stock spare? I was planning on using the stock spare, just replacing the rubber to match the diameter of the other 4 as closely as possible.

Im happy to be corrected on this, but I believe you would be able to run the stock spare with some sort or with open ended, flat faced lug nuts. The primary concern with a longer stud is that a capped lug nut would bottom out on the stud before applying any clamping force to hold your wheels in place.

Thanks for this information as I was totally unaware. I have reached out to the supplier to cancel the order if possible.

I considered cancelling my order as well, but I think I am going to wait until they arrive and then figure out what to do with them. I am having a hard time making up my mind, primarily because I got a good deal on them

Keep an eye on this thread in the Land Cruiser forums. FN currently has a new wheel in development that is designed around the GX550/LC250 platform. With a +40 offset, they should be able to fit 35s without any major modifications or trimming. They will be hub centric, and drilled for ET lug nuts so no need to replace any studs! I was lucky enough to call dibs on test fitting the first set, so I will be posting pictures and my thoughts on them in a couple months. High Offset Wheels (>=than 40mm)

For @nsfw302 and others, I did do some research last night on extended wheel studs for our platform and I was able to confirm that the front studs on the GX550 have the same part number as the 2007+ Tundra (#90942-02083). I think the rear studs should be identical but could not find a parts diagram for the rear.

Then I stumbled across a thread from the Tundra forums discussing these studs from eBay, which are USA made, and thoroughly tested by the members there.

Thank you for this info. At least there are options available if cancellation is not possible. I reached out to Inspired Overland for further details on how they installed the ZE40X wheels. I can see that they used extended lugs but have no idea what they used.

I ordered those studs a while back, just haven’t had time to install them.

Inspired Overland responded by saying no modifications were needed since the ZE40X wheels were a direct fit. They used Muteki extended lug nuts.

They probably just mean Muteki Extended Lug Nuts that are an extended body, not an ET/Extended Thread. Ask them how many turns of engagement they get and the exact model of extended lug nuts.

Side note, I do feel like it is incredibly irresponsible for retailers and RAYS themselves to sell these wheels to cars with short M14 studs which I believe all new 4R, Tacomas, etc. are moving to. All these retailers showing off ZE40X on GX550s and no word of caution on needing extended studs. The thread engagement is only 4-5 turns. Discount Tire mounted my tires on and told me they couldn't install the wheels; they require 8 turns by hand minimum. My friend had to pick them up and we installed them in my driveway. You can still get 100ft-lbs of torque on them but I don't think it's safe.

I've modeled up some custom M14 ET lug nuts that have just small enough of a cylinder diameter to fit the ZE40X. They will be 4340, tempered to 800deg, and nitrided to have superior fatigue strength for years of being torqued on and off. There's not a lot of meat on the cylinder wall but I do feel like it should be okay. Chime in if you're interested in these.. will likely be a one time deal. If there's enough interest, I'll get first articles rolling and start doing some testing...

Thank you for explaining all this. I'm totally ignorant of wheel fitment so your explanation has made things much clearer. I would be interested in your endeavor.
