Want OT, Need Lux+ - So, Mods? (2 Viewers)

Story - trading in a Ford Ranger Raptor, Great little truck, but the step into the cabin is awkward for my wife after back surgery.

We had the last gen GX and looking at 2026 550. However, we need the power step and while there is an Ebay solution, much prefer to go OEM at this point.

That said, while I do not hardcore off-road at all, I do travel fire roads, washboards, etc., on my way to remote fishing locations.

Downsides I see on Lux + for this is the 22" tire and no skid plates.

I have done research on the skid plates and there are aftermarkets available, but have not found a definitive answer on whether the the OT will mount with the existing Lux front fascia.

Changing the tires and wheels out seems straight forward - need more sidewall, so likely will go 18-20", possibly with Vossen rims. Good 40 page thread on that topic.

Not sure what I will be losing (other than rock crawl) with the AVS v KDSS on OT.

On the plus side, my dealer feels he can source an Arctic silver Lux + fairly quickly, while an OT (as he described) could be years. He said since they don't receive much allocation on OT, they don't have them to sell and because they do not have them to sell, they don't get allocation. I was reminded quickly of past frustrations with Toyota sales model.

Can anyone weigh in on the skid plate and suspension?

Thanks in advance.

I can partially help with suspension. Both Luxury+ and OT/OT+ have the AVS suspension. AVS does just fine on fire roads.

You should have enough clearance for fireroad use.

My 2024 OT did not have any issues on fire roads with clearance. I did have issues on off-shoots and really rocky trails so I lifted mine an inch (2025 OT springs) and bigger (34”) tires. This solved 98% of my issues with hitting bottom on rocks.

As you noted you will need more sidewall and either 20” or 18” or even a 17” wheel.

A Lux+ with more tire sidewall should do just fine for reasonable access on dirt/fire roads.

Check out my other post on my NYTOP bumper install. However I have heard good things about their skid plate
Oof, that was rough. You had more patience, and likely, more skill than I would of had on that bumper.

Will have to re-think their skid plate. Though someone in your thread mentioned a good experience there.

If it adds any value to this thread, I installed the NYTOP catshield a month ago and it was flawless. Construction, fit, quality A+. Fast shipping and packaged extremely well.

Obviously not a complex piece but I was very happy with their product.

I think you should be fine with their skid plate. @PHX-GX had no issues and I know of one other person that also had no problems and spoke highly of it

Same situation w/ needing the lux+ (needed the 3 row)... here she is so far.... Skidplates are in my future.

there are many here that have installed the NYTOP skid plates and are a great product and way better than OEM. I installed their cat shield skid and was easy and perfect fitment. Also installed their rock sliders which are also excellent. Recommend this company, in spite of the issues discussed with their bumper.
