After an 8 month wait I finally have my Rays Gram Lights Trans X on.

The funny thing is I likely crossed paths with the wheels on a recent trip to Japan, traveling from Osaka to Sannomiya, Kobe.

You got it, good eye!
Haha! looked familiar. You order the Rays through Matt? He was saying Rays was gonna be making new versions for the GX so the stock studs would allow more engagement. Wondering if you had to do anything to your GX to get more than 5 turns on the lugs?

Honestly, I just got the wheels on yesterday afternoon. My wife is driving it around today. The wheels were just made because they weren't in inventory. It may be a new casting. I'll have to check.

Ok cool. I dropped my deposit on an OT 6 months ago. I was gonna order a set of Volks ZE40X with Matt but was waiting to see if the new castings were gonna happen. Wanna avoid running thinner extended studs.

I don't know if Rays did anything different on these wheels. Our GX is our foul weather vehicle and most likely won't see any rugged off-roading.

Which one is your GX?

You don’t need thinner studs for Rays/Volks, extended yes or highly recommended but M14 studs fit fine.

It’s been a while since the I’ve looked at the post but I thought the consensus was you can't get ET lugs on M14 studs with Volks to engage more than 5 turns as some owners were reporting. Recall that thread on the ZE40X?

Correct you can’t run ET lug nuts on Rays/Volks with M14 studs but you can get extended M14 studs and run them, no need to get extended M12 studs.

IMO you don't want to run aftermarket wheels with ET lug nuts, they risk breaking and you have a real PITA situation if they break.

The issue is Toyota put shorter lugs on their trucks because the OEM wheels run the washer style lug nut, if you want aftermarket wheels IMO the safest thing to do is get extended studs like Kyo Ei SBLC or other brands. ET lug nuts are a band aid solution.

Sorry @Risk-Fate didn’t mean to hijack your post. @jpto lets continue on the other discussion and you can explain how using extended 14mm lugs and is gonna work if the Volks bore is undersized. Won’t the lug nuts not seat fully in the bore?

Not much to explain, it's a pretty simple calc to determine the surface area of the lug nut contacting the wheel interface and if it's sufficient to support the clamping force of the lug nut/stud with proper thread engagement. It's still a 60-degree taper, drilling for M14 lugs doesn't change that, it impacts the surface area of the mating surface. Do the calcs and you'll find your answer.
