Long time Lexus and Toyota owners, our 25 GX 550 is our 13th Toyota product. Love our 550 but also dont want to get hosed if the recall gets expanded and have watched the Tundra story play out since 2023 and just get a sinking feeling about this engine. Got an offer of $76k on ours with 19k miles (paid $74k new) yesterday on a 2023 GX460 Premium with 19k miles, torn cause the 460 is tried and true but already ancient in my opinion and after waiting for our 550, ppf and it being impossible to get one with slowed production worried we'll regret letting it go too. Whats everyone's thoughts here. We only owe $30k on our 550 but also don't want to lose out on all the positive equity we have right now and holding the bag should another extended recall come out. Torn.

I have ZERO worries about the engine failing, but let’s say it goes to poop. I cannot think of another MFR who would do better at taking care of it/making things right.

Who gives you more piece of mind; Jeep or LR who continually build crap?
How I feel, I know Toyota/Lexus will do right by us reason I am a loyal customer. I actually had a early 3rd gen Tacoma and had a rear diff replacement early in and got a free platinum warranty 10yr/125k out of it for my trouble. I think for me I'm just worried about resale seeing what happened to the Tundras. I will say I am hesitant to give up my 550 for a 460 despite making a profit on my 550 for trade in lol. Thanks for the help talking it out.

And let’s say it fails at 45k- you get a new engine. That’s not a bad deal either.

Couldn't agree more. Love my OT and feel Toyota will totally stand behind our vehicles. I talked to a Lexus engineer at the Overland Expo in Orange county two weeks ago who seemed to think that the recall would not get extended. He said that they think they have the problem (which was one small piece of metal shaving that could get into the bearings) pretty well isolated. He also said that if I had over 5K miles on my OT that it was past the danger point. Since that discussion there has been a member that has had an engine freeze up with over 20K miles so what should we believe? The only thing I feel confident about is that Toyota will stand behind our vehicles.

In the mean time I'm having a lot of fun building it out and taking it off road. By the way, the recall so far has not hurt our resale.

I think Land Rover would have a recall if they did NOT find metal shavings

This engine thing would be a major downer if you were trying to play a value game with your GX. Like I need it to hold x% of it's value so I can sell it at 49,990 miles and get maximum return to apply to the next GX or whatever purchase.

If you're paying cash and just want to use and enjoy the truck for the maximum time span possible, this engine thing is a good circumstance. I have about 26k miles now on my 2024. It'll be 2 years old in June. I hope I'm able to wrack up another 20k miles or more before mine goes in for a new engine. I'm in AZ and I maintain my vehicles religiously so the rest of the GX will be just fine virtually forever. Renewing accessories like water pump, air compressor, steering box, bushings, hoses, etc. at 100k+ or 200k+ miles is nothing compared to an engine.

I just dont want to lose a ton, seen some of the recall Tundra guys getting terrible trade in values in their groups. We only have $30k left on our 4.65 loan, I just dont want to be holding the bag when we go to trade in 5 years, we've had great luck with our prior RXh, Rav4 hybrid, my Tacomas, etc. GX is in my name but wife's car, she puts about 20k on it a year, we are at just at 20k now and no issues besides the brake squeak we got fixed under the TSB. I did an oil change at 1k, 5k, and have been doing/plan on doing them every 7k.

Cars and trucks are depreciable assets, thus not good investments. I bought my OT just for recreation and it is suiting that purpose. I plan on keeping it for a long time and during that time it is going to be an expense that I enjoy. I find that the build process is addicting and every time I go out I think of something I would like to add. If this was my every day driver I would seriously think about an exchange while resale is high but now after putting new suspension and other mods on, it's tailored to my use and wouldn't want to start a new build all over again. I did not get a recall notice but I am just one week outside the window.

A friend of mine just got a 2016 build out GX 460 and it's pretty impressive.
