The GX service manual will recommend checking /changing cabin and engine air filters at 15-30k miles. But for those of us who take our vehicles for not infrequent dust and sand showers, a bimonthly air filter service, may be a wiser approach.

My common practice on both the 2001 FJ100 and now the 2026 GX 550 is to vacuum each air box and “blow out” my air filters the weekend after every heavy dust / sand adventure.

It’s a quick, simple, and satisfying task.

There are two air boxes on the GX - one going to each side of the engine. Each airbox unclips very easily and the filters come out without much effort. Unique to these filters are a black carbon pouch at its base (which appears white in this picture and doesn’t require removal), and a 1/4 inch foam prefilter that catches larger debris. It’s a high quality set up!! 🙂👍🏽

A quick vacuum of the box and blow out of the filter, and the life of your filters can be extended at least to that next service interval. “Clean air = less repair.”

The same is likely a good practice for the cabin filters - though I haven’t gone there yet.
