Digital Key requires Internet ? (1 Viewer)

Confused with the following statement

Digital Key* (requires Remote Connect* subscription, 3-year trial included) and SmartAccess card key*

Why does it need a subscription? Doesn't it use Bluetooth or wifi-direct ?
