I have seen very few threads on towing with the 550. Wanted to share my results from my first easy tow.

This should have been easy for the GX. I’m happy to report it was.

Single axle U-haul 4x8 foot trailer. ~475 miles to move one of my children home prior to them leaving again for grad school in the fall.

I had run my GX across a CAT scale to get it’s baseline weight of 5,620lb.

4 pax, loaded U-haul trailer, full fuel and luggage weighed on a CAT scale at 8,280lb. So 2,660lb of trailer/people/stuff. Well under the GX GCWR of 15,165lb.

GX handled it easily, just as it should have. Ride was comfortable, braking up to task, acceleration up to task, tow/haul on the transmission behaved well. The short wheelbase of the GX was not an issue with this tow. This particular U-Haul trailer is narrower and shorter than the GX so I was pleased to get just under 15 miles/gallon on the trip.

My criticisms relate to the logistics of hooking up a trailer to the GX. The integrated 4-pin/7-pin on the GX is a hassle as you can’t see it without getting on the ground. The safety chain attachments are crowded. The double wall hitch receiver means you have to use an extra long pin.

This fall I have 2 going to school and will have ~700 mile trip. I’ll upsize to the 2-axle U-Haul for that and run across the scale as well. I anticipate the GX will perform well. I’m guessing I’ll be closer to ~9,000lb total for that trip.

I expected GX to tow well and it did. I look forward to giving it a little more challenge in the future. One of my selection criteria for the GX was towing and so far so good.

I anticipate the GX will do well up to 10,000lb combined weight. YMMV, but I think my absolute max would be 11,000lb combined weight if I was very careful about tongue weight and had a well dialed in WDH (weight distributing hitch). I personally envision I would not want to pull more than 5K lb to 6K lb trailer with the GX. The good news for a GX is it has enough payload (7,165 lb GWVR - 5,620 lb vehicle weight = 1,545lb capacity for my specific GX) to handle both passengers and a ~500lb to 600lb tongue weight.

For me the GX wheelbase is the primary limitation and GX payload the secondary limitation for challenging towing. For reference, I have lots of history towing a large 31 foot travel trailer when my family was younger. Loaded with bikes/food/gear the TT was ~7.5K lbs. To tow that I had a K2500 Suburban with the 8.1L Vortec. After I had a customer ECT/TCM tune hat was a towing machine. We were typically around 13K/13.5K lbs with all of our stuff. I would not want to try towing something that long or that heavy very far or in windy conditions with my GX.

Obligatory picture attached.

Additional edit - I did not have the issues with the automatic parking support braking (PKSB) firing when hooking up or backing the trailer. I know others have had this issue. I’m guessing my rental trailer had a long-enough tongue that the safety systems didn’t feel the need to panic.

Thanks for the good info ISU3GX! Do not want to hijack your thread; but thought this is a good opportunity to help out some newer GX owners..besides it looks like your towing experience is much more varied than mine!
Please excuse my typically over detailed and boring contributions. 😬

My most recent tow was a short distance over to a Utah state park, where I had a 12 night reservation. No water at that park for filling RV tanks so my fresh tank was full, extra propane bottles, another 16 gallons of drinking water and some of my GX camping gear inside the trailer. So my very tall and 8’ wide, 22’ GD Imagine (4400 totally dry and empty) was loaded close to full. At least 5500 lbs..but likely close to 5800.

The GX was probably at least 6200 lbs. I have a very robust (heavier than typical) roof rack and an XL 180 awning, plus miscellaneous up top. The cargo area was full with lots of stuff, plus the ceiling storage shelf packed to the gill. So my total ‘package’ weight was right at 12000 lbs.

Naturally I do have a quality, adjustable WD hitch (solid bars) with a friction style anti-sway. From experience I load the trailer correctly to both offset the front pass-thru garage which is stuffed, and place lots of misc item weight over the axles.

Before the upgrades my stock OT wallowed, bobbed, weaved, occasionally bottomed out even with a lighter load out.
My final fix after a couple interim steps:
  • upgraded the OEM suspension to the Old Man Emu MT64 kit with appropriate springs in the rear and a bit of front rake designed in for towing;
  • installed safer E-rated 285/70/R18 Toyo AT3 tires for heavier loads;
  • mounted those on 18x8 +25 wheels to push out (widen) my wheel track and increase lateral stability;
  • added a set of extended DuroBump bump stops for extra suspension protection;
  • and installed a PowerBrake big brake kit up front (maybe my fave upgrade!).

At this point I’m in really good shape. I can easily cruise on highways at 65-70, pass when needed at slightly higher speeds, the GX is no longer getting pushed around even from strong winds or big rigs, and the GX brake controller is confidence inspiring. Better than the old 2012 Sequoia? A huge improvement! Gas mileage? Don’t ask! 😅

What is your brake controller gain setting for your trailer?

What is your brake controller gain setting for your trailer?
I have it set on 5, and I believe that’s what it first defaults to.
The next time I tow I’m going to check a couple things dealing with my aftermarket Bluetooth controller vs. the GX controller. This year was the first time using the GX controller and it was really smooth.
I did have the trailer wheel bearings repacked and the brakes checked a couple years ago, so those are in good order.

Thanks. i have to set controller on 7-8 now depending on load. I believe that's too high as trailer fully loaded is only 4200 lbs. My Redarc controller in my 4Runner works mid range gain setting on same trailer. A setting of 7 would have caused lock ups. Think I'll take GX and trailer to RV center and let them check the voltage signal on the wiring and the condition of the trailer electromagnets

Let me know what they find out. Anything odd or not right I’d be very interested. I can’t be sure ..but I think the Grand Design dealer we used in Boise 3 summers back mentioned they confirmed the magnets were operating, activating fine; all else good.

At that point we had made several long distance trips a few years in a row, and I became a bit paranoid. So I scheduled with those guys on the way to the Puget Sound. We stayed 3 nights at the Air Guard base campground in Boise, did some shopping and so forth. I think I may have the brakes checked again next year just to be safe.
Here is another pic of what we tow, shown at JBLM family campground, Puget Sound.

Braking issue turned out to be a ground wire problem on the trailer electrical system. It actually got worse before I put trailer in the shop. Now can set gain at about 6.5 on GX trailer controller, just under trailer tire lock up. Huge improvement though gain still a little higher than what I would expect.

Nice. At least they found something that was apparently the culprit.
As I believe I mentioned previously, I will check things out again the next time I am prepared to tow the trailer.
Then I can compare your findings with what mine are.
I do have a very powerful front brake now on my GX since last fall.
Obviously, that could be playing a role on which setting on the trailer brake controller will allow my trailer brakes to lock up.
I will try to let you know for sure.
