Bit the bullet on getting a dash cam but didn’t want to go the Fitcam route so I picked up a Viofo a329s 2-channel with the new hardwire kit and I’m super happy with the results.
I wanted to have a parking mode option and felt that the Viofo was the best option!
PROs
CONs
Installation Lessons-learned:
Pending:
- Pictures and videos of the rear camera setup and actual driving video quality
Getting prepped, with rear channel routed behind weather stripping channels:
Fuse box, OEM
Fuse Box, tapped for constant and accessory power for parking mode:
Grounding connection point I chose:
Another potential grounding point but much harder to reach (bolt in middle of picture):
Grounded, with both pre- and post- crimping of the power lines:
I wanted to have a parking mode option and felt that the Viofo was the best option!
PROs
- camera quality has been nice
- hardware kit made for seamless power availability
CONs
- Price
- hardware kit was marginally tricky to install
- the on-glass footprint is obviously worse than the FitCam or even other standalone dashcams (e.g. some Garmin varieties)
- you’ll need to make your own mount (or purchase one) for the rear camera but I spent a couple dollars at Home Depot one some metal flashing and it worked great
Installation Lessons-learned:
- obviously take out any floor mats, liners, etc. Pop off same panel under the glove box that you’d have to remove to reach the air filter but I recommend fully disconnecting it instead of leaving the lighting power harness attached and “dangling”
- remove the passenger footwell side panel (at the base of the A pillar) for better concealing of the cabling.
- Run the rear channel cable up to the A pillar and tuck the rest in the empty space behind the above-mentioned pillar
- There are two options for the grounding cable that I saw - a large bolt with direct frame connection that’s ideal but hard to reach, or a smaller screw that’s part of the dash housing that’s still grounded that is easier to reach and adequate in my opinion.
