I will be picking up a GX in a few weeks, out of state and bringing back to CO. The dealership has already confirmed they won't collect anything beyond MSRP, DSH and a $599 fee.Same basic story here, 3 times in a row now. I live in and license here in Colorado.
2017 - bought a new MB GLE 43 in Albuquerque, they wanted to charge me the sales tax and registration. Once they relented we had a deal, and ordered the car; it arrived 2 months later. We took possession there and drove it home.
2022 - found a new 2022 Sequoia at the Prescott AZ dealer. They too wanted to collect tax and registration. Was able to satisfy them enough by taking delivery in CO (delivered here to my neighborhood via trailer behind a huge pickup, $350). I signed a final 3 docs the driver had, tipped him and he was on his way back to AZ.
2024 - The GX became available at the Albuquerque dealership. They really, really wanted to collect my CO tax and registration. I said no, this lasted about a week until I had my lender get involved. Done. I drove the Sequoia down, and completed trade-in for the GX..taking possession in NM.
In each instance they were highly insistent, but eventually gave up due to various circumstances. I made it clear I wasn’t buying if they insisted on collecting my CO tax and registration. Each time the dealers calculated and presented me a proposed amount, I sent it to my local county registration clerk. Each time the numbers were wrong and convoluted.
Well done. Same here. Always have less headache at CO DMV when I handle tax and registration after the sale in home state.Same basic story here, 3 times in a row now. I live in and license here in Colorado.

I have bought three cars outside CO and in each case, yes, the selling dealer provided the temp tag. Might want to verify ability to extend tags if needed (if CO paperwork is not ready by expiration of tag, some states are short temp period). But hey, enforcement of registration and even insurance doesn't seem to be a priority here so there's that.I will be picking up a GX in a few weeks, out of state and bringing back to CO. Did the out of state dealership give temp tags? Anything CO specific to ask for? Other advice?
I was planning on taking it to the DMV and taking care of everything in person once back to CO.
Yes, temp tag put on by dealership in each of my 3 cases; not much money.I have bought three cars outside CO and in each case, yes, the selling dealer provided the temp tag. You might need to complete a a VIN inspection/verification in order to register in your county. Usually done at a sheriff's office by appointment.
