GX550 OT+ vs. 6th gen 4Runner TRD Pro (1 Viewer)

If the sequoia didn’t have that awkward battery 3rd row area I would do it…. Nothing beats having a flat area for gear in the trunk… the suspension is an afterthought
The space that the battery takes up in the 4Runner is a bit of a bummer when compared to the GX, but speaking of cargo quarters, I really love the idea of a slide down rear window. The GX window hits my bike rack when the rack is up.

Putting $$$ aside. I cannot attest to the 6th Gen, but we do have both GX and 4R. The GX is what we call our vacation car. The GX sits in the garage until its road trip time. My wife drives the 4r as a daily driver, she used to have a highlander for a daily driver, but we trashed that for the GX and swapped her out to the 4R. We enjoy the extra space of the GX for the road trips but still struggle with enough room up front for all our coffee cups, laptop, phones, etc. Rationalize for owning both...., who cares if you can afford it. After all its only money and you can't take it with you.
I like how you think Gone Fishing!

I'd like to chime in purely from a power/response perspective.

the v6 absolutely dominates over the 4 cylinder (with hybrid). I've owned both, and if you're looking for a car that has quick changes in response, power, etc, do not choose the 4 cylinder.

Also, the 4cylinder (with hybrid) gets about the same mpg as the v6

the 4Runner looks nicer (TRD Pro only) the base model 4Runner is god awful ugly.

I actually bought a trail hunter, I had it for 6 weeks and then swapped it for the GX550. just too many compromises in the cheaper vehicle. so much of the cost of that vehicle is going into the additional off-road parts that they add, whereas in the GX550 the money seems to be poured straight into the basic vehicle. I really like the trail hunter, but the GX550 is a superior vehicle in every way.

It depends on your use cases:

1. TRD pro is part time 4WD. If you are off road 90% of time and 10% on road, TRD PRO is better. Otherwise, you are going to drive the car in 2WD 90% on road in TRD PRO. GX 550 is Full Time 4WD with LSD, it is better on road if you prefer 4WD.

2. TRD pro Turbo inline V4 + Hybrid is better on stop/start low speed, but slower at higher speed compare to GX V6 twin turbo.

3. GX 550 theoretically lasts longer because it has less components such as Hybrid in TRD Pro.

4. GX Interior is much better than TRD Pro.

So if you do a lot of off road, you should choose TRD PRO, if you rarely offroad, GX is better.

Feedback here has been helpful and fun. I am going to look closely and really pay attention to how it drives and sounds when it arrives at the end of the month. Scrutinize the interior. Will try not to be swayed too much by how good it looks. Ice Cap/Cockpit Red combo.

I've been looking at the 4Runner TRD pro, Land Cruiser premium, and the GX obviously. I just can't get over the fact that the former are basically the same price as the standard Overtrail. Unfortunately for my own personal preferences, I'd honestly prefer the button/screen layout of the 4Runner, but the engine and cargo room along with the high price really put a damper on those two for me. Test drove a used TRD Pro and wasn't impressed by the power delivery/shifting. I'm not sure if it was maybe just this specific one, but it seemed very jerky/inconsistent with responding to throttle inputs and the power delivery when trying to get it on it some, but without fully flooring it. I know my current 5th gen 4Runner needed a pedal device to adjust how the ECU interprets throttle input, so wondering if the 6th gen might need it as well or if that's just how the hybrid/turbo 4 drives. The stock GX I just test drove felt good to me though in terms of response and felt much smoother.

Oh yeah. I remembered I also hate the unnecessary badging everywhere on the 4Runner. Looks tacky imo.

I chickened out guys. It arrived last week and instead of taking, I made a buddy's year and told him to call the dealer and take it (he was also in line). Really wanted it but it was going to be painful to try to lease trade the iX M60. EV depreciation is painful. We are stacking the miles on the BMW though, and it is an amazing machine, so it is not the worst story here. I was just trying to go for a garage only containing body on frame vehicles :ROFLMAO:. Will get on the list again for a 4runner or GX in another 12 months is the plan . . . . Thanks for all the feedback.
