Posting this here in the TALK section instead of PURCHASING section, but crosses both topics.

After getting a run around from my local dealer about not knowing when allocations will come, with guess of wait maybe 2-3 years, and a few markup add-ons, with $2k non-refundable deposit, I decided to head to a slightly bigger dealer more towards the downtown area.

The director at this 2nd dealer was not only super chill, but it was too easy to ask about when I could get a GX. He asks for my driver's license ands starts adding my order into his system, without even discussing what the deposit is, markup add-ons, wait lists/times.

I tell him about my experience from the other dealer, and he said here no problem, I get an allocation for your trim, I call you, even if it is not your colour, you like you take, you don't like you continue to wait. Claimed that most likely will not be several years to wait, will likely land on something that fits close.

Then I ask him how many he sells, he tells me 5-6 per year, wait what ? I ask him about his wait list, he gives me a best guess of 50-60 ppl. That math does not look good. Tells me not to worry, will all work out in the end, because people are too picky and will end up waiting and I can bypass them.

Then we discuss trim, tells me that 70% of the ppl on his list want OT, so better chances to land an LUX+/Exec sooner, competing with less ppl on the whole list.

THEN THAT IS WHEN THINGS TAKE A TURN IN THE CHAT (hence this post) ....................

Dealer: Have you ever driven a GX ?
Me: No

Dealer: Hmm, have you ever driven a big truck ?
Me: Besides the occasional U-Haul, nothing like an Escalade, Yukon or F-150 no, let alone a GX, oh yeah an Isuzu Rodeo in my younger years

Dealer: I owned 3 GX's, '21, '22 and '24
Dealer: They are TERRIBLE to drive on public roads, pulls all over the place
Dealer: I workout and am in shape, and I had to drive it with 2 hands to keep it in the lane
Dealer: Bounces all over the place, pulls left and right, struggle is real
Dealer: My wife hated it

Dealer: Will you at least offload with it
Me: Not at all, zero interest, just own it for fun and going to work and long road trip vacations
Dealer: Hmm, well ok, your choice

Dealer: You know this truck is highly stolen right
Dealer: Those f***** are good, they will put a tracker on your truck and follow you everywhere
Dealer: Have a client who had his GX stolen 3 times, even with tracking on it
Dealer: Wife felt she was being followed all the time
Dealer: Did you check with your insurance, won't be cheap
Me: Yeah insurance not bad, close to the cost for a TX, aware of the high theft thing, very worrisome
Dealer: Ok, your choice, let's continue

Dealer: Have you driven a TX500h hybrid
Me: Only the TX350
Dealer: The TX350 is a cow, the 500h is an incredible drive, handles so well, super comfortable, lots of power, neighbour has one and the look is growing on me. Own an RX500 and want to upgrade to the TX500 next, amazing drive (with 4-wheel steering too)
Dealer: My wife said to me, I am done with this madness (GX), between horrible street driving/handling and high theft fear, change models

Me: How come you are willing to "sell" me a GX
Dealer: Simple, you will either lease or finance with us. If you were coming in here to pay cash, different story (export)
Me: How much for financing
Dealer: 6.9% for 72 months, $2200/mo (CAD) with zero down, can talk trade-in later

Me: Any mark-ups / add-ons
Dealer: Nothing, why would I do that, just the truck and a bit of luxury tax
Me: (thinking) probably making their money on the financing interest

Dealer: You know this thing is a gas guzzler right ?
Dealer: No joke, cost me minimum $160 - $180 (CAD) per week, was horrible.

You get the point here, the chat went on way more than the above, but in the end, he told me, I call you, you want it you take it, you don't want it, the next guy will take it. You change your mind and eventually want a TX down the road after impatiently waiting, can move your deposit to that. I can make you a deal on a future TX, zero deal on the GX.

Great looking truck, but is the drive really THAT BAD on the roads ???
Is the gas consumption really that bad ??
Are those who are financing paying that high of an interest rate with Lexus ??
Are some dealers allowing a cash purchase ??

The short answer is "No", the drive is not that bad. My GX doesn't pull. I've driven 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks. The GX rides slightly better than my old 1/2 ton truck, and noticeably better than my old 3/4 ton truck. My old Macon and my wife's current X5 drive way way way better. The GX is, first and foremost, a body on frame truck. Having said that, it doesn't pull, it doesn't bounce all over the place, it just does a lot of floating up and down over bumps and, with small irregularities in the road it can chatter. I don't have many irregularities on the asphalt and chip-seal roads around me though.

So, if you're after a silky smooth luxury ride, the GX ain't it - IMO. But if you're after the most capable and luxurious truck-based SUV on the market, get the GX!

I agree with JPE - the GX is a smooth ride for what it is - my OT rides better than my F150 (both lifted on 34s), but similar characteristics. It does not 'bounce and pull all over the place' like the dealer said. Sounds to me like the dealer was trying to steer you towards a 500h. My guess is that those do not sell near as well as GX's and they need to move inventory.

As JPE said, smooth ride but has an annoying chatter over small road imperfections for some reason. See: ‘Overtrail Vibration’ Thread

Just to be clear, it appears some Overtrails are worse than others. For me, it's hardly ever happens. Only on two or three sections of road that I've driven on for about 50 feet on each section. The other 1,500 miles I've put on my OT+ have been chatter free.

I have an OT and love to off-road. I have had lots of trucks from Ford Dually' s for pulling horse trailers to GMC Denali's for pleasure. This one is the best.

Yea my GX drives great. Yea it is a body on frame truck, no it is not a unibody truck.

Sounds like buddy wanted to steer you into a TX or something he could move this month rather than a hypothetical GX next year.

Addressing your points specifically

Great looking truck, but is the drive really THAT BAD on the roads ???

No it is not that bad, some people might not like it but it’s not objectively bad.

Is the gas consumption really that bad ??

Yes the gas consumption really is that bad. I get ~400km a tank. Do not buy a GX if you care about mileage at all. This GX is worse on gas than any vehicle I have owned ( Jeeps , 6.2 V8 pickups, TTV8 AMG’s, BMW M6 V10 were all better than this)

Are those who are financing paying that high of an interest rate with Lexus ??

Dunno I bought mine cash

Are some dealers allowing a cash purchase ??

Yes I bought mine cash with no markup. My wait was about a year and a half after ordering at launch. That said, production is as low as it gets right now and I would say these are going to ramp up quickly. The “waitlist” is what you experience, Lexus doesn’t order specific cars they get whatever Lexus sends them and dole them out from there. There are no custom order GX’s.

Your dealer is a crack-head. The GX doesn't pull left or right - if it does then there is something wrong with it. It does have a solid rear axle because it is a real truck (this is a good thing), so it doesn't drive as smooth as a fully-independent-suspension truck, but it's still a very nice and smooth ride. My wife comments all the time how incredibly smooth the GX rides and she drives a Mercedes GLC300 SUV. My last truck was a 2013 Land Rover LR4 will full independent suspension and also air suspension - it rode slightly softer and smoother than this GX. Like on a scale of 0 for crap to 100 for glass smooth, the LR4 was a 95 and the GX is a 90. Tell your dealer to put the pipe down.

OT+ here with 1k miles. Suspension was initially harsh on the rear but has smoothed out tremendously since the 200 mile mark. I don't experience anything like what your dealer said on the car pulling all over the place. The overall ride is comfortable but hitting road bumps does transmit more wiggles and jiggles to the overall body vs my Q5 which does a better job isolating and dampening bumps. I think your dealer is trying to steer you towards getting a sale now vs. later.

I do believe that it's all relative to what you owned before the GX. We came from a Tundra and the GX drives like a luxury car to me. If you're migrating over from a sedan/unibody vehicle, I can see how someone might be surprised by the additional liveliness of a body-on-frame vehicle.

My takeaway is that they were clearly trying to change your mind and get you into a TX that day, which probably has more availability than waiting for a GX. In either case, it is not the dealer's place to tell you about how a vehicle drives based on their personal experience, that's for you to decide during the test drive.

I just got into my GX about two weeks ago. It doesn't pull left/right—if it does, it is because the roads you are driving on are rutted (which could be a good reason to own a GX). Public roads in Canada are in poor shape.

Compared to other cars I have owned (Range Rovers, Land Rover Defender, Macan), they all wander.

Fuel economy is close to what they advertised. Hopefully, everyone buying a GX knows what they are getting into.

Overall, there has been no surprises with my GX aside from the exceptional dealer service.

Yes, its intermittent/road condition dependent

No pulling here, no wandering, still on stock Overtrail Toyo tires. From CO to Virginia via I-70 and I-64, 70 to 85 mph mostly smooth one-handed driving. Tires set at 38psi with hand gauge. Very easy driving at those speeds. I did have some curvy, slower portions. MPGs recorded as: 19.51, 17.95, 16.23, 16.32, 15.66, 17.08, 18.03. Front seats are very comfortable on my imperfect back; I did Topeka KS to Richmond VA nonstop. Drive mode was mostly Normal, but some Eco used.

I think you will be happier with a TX or the RX. You seem greatly affected by what the dealer says. Vehicles like this are purchased in your heart and mind, the decision is made at your end, the dealer only sells it to you.
If you yourself don’t know what you want the dealer has every right to try to sell you what they do have in stock.

Drive is fine, it is likely the roughest ride in the current Lexus lineup but it’s great for BoF SUV you definitely don’t need to workout to drive the steering is light and precise

I paid cash, haven’t heard of any dealer insisting on leasing/financing in the GTA.

Yes it’s terrible on gas, somehow the GX550 and the LX600 have the same curb weight and it’s the least aerodyamic modern SUV. The cold temp. and winter blend gas can’t be helping, my latest trip showed 29 l/100 or 8mpg, the gas tank is tiny.

I still love it though.

It's entirely unprofessional for your dealer to make misleading and false statements on a product that he cannot deliver on a timely basis. I don't believe Lexus corporate would be pleased with this odd behavior. The simple fact is that the GX is in high demand, limited availability with a sizable waiting list, but still an excellent choice for what it's designed to do. The current demand on the GX will cool off over time, but it's still your choice to wait it out or look for alternatives. In my opinion, it's worth the wait.
