1 hour project for the afternoon was swapping to OEM rock rails / sliders for a month or two in anticipation of a few extended weekend trips in California .. OEM running boards are going into storage.
Tips:
1. The best approach is doing “a DJ” - spending the money and investing in a good selection of solid rock rails that are wide enough to double as a decent running board step. (In the case of DJ sled SLEE running board / sliders).
2. SECOND best approach: Go on FB marketplace or CL and pick up a set of OEM running boards or rock rails, and do the swap when you need one or the other .. (you can pick up a set of one or the other for between 500 - 900 bucks on CL or FBMP) … frankly if you are spending at the upper end of that range, then just get the SLEE or SLEE equivalent..
3. The OEM swap is easy and quick - 1. electrical disconnect (have a couple of zip ties to tuck it away after disconnecting). 2. 14 mm bolts torqued to 40 NM +/- (or two ugga duggas
OEM - running boards - aesthetic and functional IMHO - but far too delicate (cheaply made) for off road use.
One friend helping is good - two friends helping even faster and makes for a fun gathering to talk cars!
