A physician friend sent me this medscape article this morning with the bi-line: “doctors are boring” (with the exception of number 11).

I think there is a common misconception that physicians are rolling in cash and can buy whatever they like, whenever they want.

In truth most doctors wisely choose frugality over fancy.

Most physicians leave med school with significant debt, with 28% of them owing more than $300k. This is after sacrificing anywhere from 12-16 years of their lives through postgraduate training, working for peanuts in those first few years of residency.

My wife and I were frugal in our first years (living at my parents home in Torrance during med school and residency training and saving our dollars for eliminating debt and our first home).

My first car, a 1981 Honda civic 1500 dx was purchaed for $1500 cash, saved up after working for two years in a biology lab at UCLA washing glassware.

Since then with years of hard work and smart real estate picks, the homes became more stately and the vehicles fancier and purchased with meaningful motoring in mind.

The first two exciting adds were a black 1992 Mazda Miata, and once the babies arrived a preowned 1992 Toyota Landcruiser. My love for Landcrusiers was thereafter reinforced in my time driving them overseas, in regions of conflict and natural disaster.

The passion for convertibles / sports cars and high clearance landcruisers continued for 40 years after that Honda civic. (Now replaced by Porsches and a 2026 Lexus GX 550 OT+).

The vehicles have evolved but the joy and passion of motoring has continued.

I will however attest - no car brought me as much happiness as that 1981 Honda 1500 dx, with its burned out clutch, in which i taught myself how to drive a manual. It’s a testament that being happy is more about passion and less about pocketbook.

This morning I was looking at the math behind why the Toyota Camry is a number one choice by physicians polled in the above medscape article (and why many smart GX owners elect to keep their GX in the garage, and drive a Toyota hybrid as their daily driver.) - my friend SSuberi being one of them … 🙂👍🏽

Don’t get me wrong - the point of a vehicle like a GX is to drive it, but yesterday my wife and I made a startling discovery.

Driving down this weekend to pick up my GX from its Overlander Woodworks overhaul, my wife suggested the smart option of picking up a one way rental on the way down, instead of driving two vehicles.

We picked up a rental from the SLO airport and dropped it off at Long Beach airport.

The 2026 Toyota hybrid we drove was fairly plain Jane, but had some of the same features as my GX, including drive assist, and familiar controls.

The cost of the rental was $66, the savings in gas cost, compared to our GX (17 mpg vs 50 mpg) at current gas prices would have been close to $100 (for a round trip journey).

There is definitely wisdom behind ownership of a hybrid with excellent mileage as a primary, and keeping the GX for “Adventures.”

As the miles stack up the delta in gas costs alone moves into the 1000’s. If for example you are a 16,000 annual mile driver, over the course of 5 years, the savings balloons to $20,000 by commuting with a Toyota Camry hybrid and keeping the GX garaged for special occasions. ($0.25 per mile savings).

Fun fact is that by 10 years of ownership the Camry hybrid has paid for itself in gas savings alone.

This is our deliberate type of vehicle/mileage mix in our houshold.

RX350h (36 MPG all the time and everywhere) for around town or road trips that don’t need the GX capability or rear cargo storage.

GX when we need storage or I want the extra capability.

In our mix the RX gets ~2/3 of our miles, the GX gets the other third of miles with 80%+ of the GX miles being road trips that involve fishing, off-roading, exploring or towing something.

In fact, taking the GX to Truckee, CA area for a long weekend this week to visit my son and go off roading with him and his buddy.
