Apple Carplay Resolution

I noticed that with Lexus, Apple Carplay's resolution seems to be set too low so everything appears too large. The buttons are big and you can't see a wide area in map applications. This issue isn't present with the native applications or with Android Auto. The best way I can explain this issue, its like a computer monitor where the resolution is set too low for that application only.

It is unfortunate. Fortunately, a new feature of CarPlay in the upcoming iOS 26 is “smart display zoom,” which helps CarPlay handle bigger screens better.

Developer beta is out now, public beta should be out next month, official release should be in September.

Thank you for posting this - the new software definitely looks better. I don't have this issue at all in my BMW IX - is this a software issue with Lexus?

I guess it all depends on the resolution of the car’s screen in relation to its size. My previous car, a Kia Telluride, had a 10.25” widescreen. CarPlay, when used in full screen, was 1920 x 720 pixels. CarPlay on the GX with the Lexus dock on the left removed is also 1920.x 720 pixels… but the usable screen is 12.3” (same as most modern Toyotas with widescreens, also remember that although the Lexus screen is listed as 14”, the bottom chunk is not available to CarPlay). So no extra information will be displayed and everything will just seem larger. What is the resolution of CarPlay on your iX vs its screen size?

Today, I took my test device out to the GX since I had to report a few bugs and I noticed that developer beta 2 provides even more scaled resolution. Here’s the home screen today with smart display zoom on:

I'm not sure what the resolution is, but here is a screenshot from the BMW screen. How can I check the resolution?

So it looks like your iX has a pretty good ratio of pixels displayed to screen size, much more similar to my older Telluride than the GX550.

While it’s unfortunate the GX550’s default has such a low ppi, it’s helpful this new feature can come in and save the day.

Beta 1 showed 2470 x 925 pixels, and beta 2 is showing 2880 x 1080 pixels in the same space that used to display 1920 x 720.

I’m definitely excited to get this on my everyday phone.
