Burger JB4 vs AFE Scorcher - Piggy Back Tuners (1 Viewer)

Man I remember BMS from BMW forums when I first bought my e92 335i back in ‘08. I feel old

Let me state that for the purpose of this vehicle, speed was never the objective, for me.

I have been less than impressed with stability, handling, and brakes on the GX. But again, that’s not a fault. It’s more truck than car. So at this time, adding more power to this truck makes little sense to me. (Reference: if you’re going to drive like a loon, I’ll take an over-braked car over an over-powered car any day). My tuned X5M is a great example of a car that weighs over 5,000 lbs where more power isn’t going to encourage you to drive faster as there are other limiting factors.

Performance is not singularly focused in 0-60 times and adding power does not equate to driving faster or more recklessly. The added torque helps in towing, overtaking, hills, offroading, more usable power in a different part of the bandwith and with VF tuner, my mileage got a little better.

I'd caution against buying a tuner for towing, because 1) I truly doubt there's any situation where power is the problem and 2) towing generates an immense amount of heat that has to go somewhere, and a tune adds more heat without adding any extra cooling. I assume it's the same when it comes to off roading.

I won't pooh-pooh anybody for buying a tuner, but I don't think it's a very useful / practical thing. Fun, though.

I think these things are already stupid fast for their size & intent. You can hit the top speed in like 20 seconds and it is sketchy up there.

I did get to briefly drive an F85 X5M competition around an autocross track and an F15 50i down some windy roads - it is absolutely wild how capable and easy to chuck those things are, despite weighing almost as much as the GX. I only wish Toyota could tune their 10 speeds as brilliantly as BMW tunes those ZF 8 speeds.

Yes, totally agree. I have been driving BMW ZF 8 speeds for years and it never gear hunts. I find the GX tends to do that a lot with pick up off the line even in "normal" driving conditions. The paddle shifters are useless to help slow down, it takes over 2 seconds for a gear change. The transmission seems to be very disconnected with the engine load demand.

OK gang, sorry to revive this discussion. I’ve got a scorcher BT on the way that I’m going to use only with the TRD air filters, which appear to be K&N like but less oily. I will likely eventually go full intakes and exhaust. I’m coming from a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT so I’m used to good power and sound. I think this motor is great but a little too tame for my liking. And I do agree that I wish the shifting was a lot more crisp.

I drive most of the time in sport+ mode on the GX. I think what everyone is referring to on this particular thread is the sport plus mode on the scorcher BT. Is that right? I plan to install this under the hood and leave it there and just toggle through the Lexus drive modes and not the different drive modes on the scorcher bt. I’m thinking that I can start off with the scorcher BT in sport only and cycle through the Lexus drive modes. Then, I will switch the scorcher BT to sport plus and cycle through the Lexus drive modes again. Then compare everything and see which combination is to my liking. Does that make sense or do the Lexus drive mode not do anything once the scorcher BT is installed??? Thx

They each have their own functions and do not integrate with each other. The modes on the AFE unit will do its own thing while the Lexus modes will modify other things like steering, suspension, and throttle response. I used to always use Sport on the aFe and Sport+ on the Lexus mode.
