Having had both the lc250 and now the Lexus gx OT , while technically they are built on the same platform , the gx is clearly in a different category than the lc in all aspects.
Engine and transmission of the lc is by far its weakest point. The 4cyl Engine felt weak and struggling, and sounded terrible. The buggy feeling at even low speeds gives it a Prius cvt feeling. In contrast the v6 turbo is smooth , loads of power, and sounds fantastic. Despite the 20 or so on paper difference in hp and tq figures the gx feels like it has additional 150 tq on the lc
Ride and handling is far superior in the gx. Much more damped response and controlled body motion in corners
I could jusify the lc shortcomings for the price I paid for the 1958 model at 52k but I don’t understand how the upper trims are priced so similarly. I think the Hagerty comparison sums it up clearly. The gx is the real Landcruiser replacement in the US market.
The lc is more in 4Runner and Fj category and while competing in price with the gx. Below are some less known differences between the 2 based on thinkers video :
Bigger rear end axle housing and gears on gx that is shared with the 300 series
Thicker sway bars on gx
Stronger higher axle cvs on the gx
1inch more ground clearance on gx
Even the gx exterior despite only being few inches longer on the front overhang it feels much more substantial than the lc , and reminiscent of the old 200 series.
And for people that think the interior build quality , fit and finish and material are comparable , they need to get their vision checked. The gx is far superior in this department as well.
In my opinion there should be a 15k premium for gx just based on power terrain , suspension and stronger underpinnings without getting into more premium interior and exterior
The hybrid power terrain in lc is absolutely pointless in my experience as the engine would kick in the moment you touch the throttle, hence it’s only advantage is to provide additional torque until the turbos fully spooled, at this point you are left with the 4cyl that has to carry extra 600 pounds of hybrid weight to the redline.
The lc feels like an unfinished gimmicky attempt to bring Fj back but at Landcruiser price point . Toyota has completely missed the mark stuffing Camry power terrain in a Landcruiser.
Again you could justify the shortcomings of the lc at 60k for the fully loaded model but not when there is a significant price overlap on the two models. And what is more baffling is that the lcs while not as hard as the gx in terms of availability , they are still flying off the lot at or just below msrp
