Yesterday I spoke to a salesman at a large Lexus dealership in the Denver area. He said they have 300 people on the waiting list and they are only getting 10-12 GX550's per month. He said that they try to match up what Lexus sends them to the wish list of the customers who have put down a deposit. Meaning they take what they can get that is close.

Has anyone here ordered one to their exact specs and received it? Or is this guy blowing smoke up my skirt?

I got the exact build I was looking for today when I went into the dealership. Incognito lux +. They had some allocations for OT+ as well. Seems like in the northeast they don’t have a shortage.

If by “ordering to exact specs” you mean configuring all options and packages as available online then, afaik, Lexus (Toyota in general really) doesn’t allow for that. Lexus builds what they think will sell / customers want and then they send that to dealerships. Dealerships try to match up cars they get to what their customers want as closely as they can. This why, for 2 years, people have bean bitching about not being able to get OTs with sunroof delete or OT+/Lux+ without cool box.

Yes. True. What I wanted was “everything” so that worked out for me. However if you wanted “custom” then you’re out of luck. You get what you get and you don’t get upset.

He is not blowing smoke, this is how it works with Lexus.

There's lots of advice and boatloads of actual experience reported on here to back this up. At first I was like others, and perhaps you, I had to test the waters (went in and talked to several different dealers) to be sure it was true. I never owner Lexus before and thought how Lexus does this is unusual.

You can make a crude classification of dealers selling the GX into three broad categories:

• Those that sell at MSRP, with no markup. Expect the 50, 75, 100 person-long waitlist. If you are flexible you might shorten the wait some, "Hello Mr UserError, we got an OT+ in Nori Green and the person it was allocated to had to backout, do you want it?, Let us know ASAP." ASAP means be prepared to decide in hours, not days or weeks.
• High volume dealers that will and do ship out of state and across country, or you can drive or fly in, take delivery and drive home. They start at MSRP and typically the vehicles will have more PIOs than average, the high dollar PIO items like roof rack, cat back exhaust, blah blah blah. You can ask to have the PIOs not be installed but the sales guys will say "you know those port guys, they might just go ahead and install even if we request not to, those port guys they're in a world of their own... " The east coast has two of these dealers, one in FL, and another in Allentown PA. I've been in and talked to the Allentown, PA dealer, they are fully legit.
• Dealers that have a non-negotiable $10k market adjustment, and maybe also undercoating, ceramic coating and leather protectants add-ons (+ $4k). The more notable of these dealers are in SoCal and the Bay Area and get mentioned (cursed out) on here a lot.
