Hi all, I have a Prem+ and would like to replace the thick, chrome trimmed running boards with Land Cruiser running boards, preferably illuminated. Has anyone else done this? I was told that the GX OT and Prem running boards aren't swappable, so I'm wondering if there is an LC model I should stay away from (LC/First Editon/1958) and which would be compatible? Really appreciate any feedback.

just add black vinyl and call it a day.

It's an option I've considered and that looks a LOT better. But I think that trying to apply vinyl myself will end up with the neighbor's kids getting an earful of cussing. Having a shop do it was more $ than getting used LC boards so I thought I'd try that route.

I know the rock rails from the OT are not compatible with non-OT models and the First Edition LC seems to have the same rock rails. The 1958 doesn't come with a running board.

The OT rock rails won't fit on a non-OT?? I would assume that the bolt locations would be the same, right?

Nope. From what I’ve read on here the Premium and Luxury trims do not have the same mounting points.

Probably because rock sliders are intended to protect the vehicle if you ram into stuff offroad (or the big metal hoops in front of the pumps at gas stations in my wife's case). Running boards are basically a step. The forces involved are pretty different.

@CaryGX550 swapping your Premium+ running boards for LC ones is feasible, but compatibility varies by model. The LC 1958 lacks running boards, and the First Edition shares rock rails with the Overtrail, which aren't compatible with non-OT GX trims. Consider aftermarket options or vinyl wrapping for a cost-effective solution.

Can’t help but do note that I swapped my OT running boards to my wife’s LC FE and took her rock rails. So far I don’t miss the step platform but I turn 69 in October so time will tell!

I had it done when the PPF was done. It's kind of gloomy now, but can send a picture later. I don't believe they pulled anything off since it's a fairly flat piece to wrap and just wrapped it on the truck

I also did clear PPF on the entire front end last year and gloss black vinyl on the fender flares but the added cost of the running boards didn't make sense to me... I figured there would be a cheaper alternative somewhere down the road as I wasn't sure if I'd keep the stock boards....

If you are handy you probably only need like $60 worth of vinyl to do it. The area doesn't really have any complex curves and is mostly straight cuts.

I saw the running board diagram and it is even sold in separate pieces. Wish there was a video to see how to easily disassemble them to get the perfect coverage. Would be great to tuck in the upper edge to improve longevity.

I actually think that gloss black PPF would be much better and hold up much better!
