Rear Spoiler Removal (1 Viewer)

So this is my first post. In December the wife and I traded our white 2017 4Runner Limited for a Blue Luxury GX. We love the GX, wish we would have went with white because the blue is a nightmare to keep clean but that’s another story. I love the blue but it’s a magnet for dust and pollen (Florida).

Well tonight I was cleaning the GX and got in a rush and did one of the stupidest things I have ever done in my life and pulled the GX in the garage with the rear gate open. Somehow I missed all those warning sounds and hit the garage door with the rear gate spoiler. Luckily it didn’t break but it got scratched severely. We just got our 5000 mile service and I can’t let that go as is so I called a friend of mine who is a really good painter. He’s going to repair the scratches a repaint it to match for me free of charge but I have to remove it and drop it off to him. Has anyone removed their rear gate spoiler and if so do you have any pointers? Thanks in advance!

Ouch, laugh it off...we all have done dumb stuff like this! I got stuck in covered parking with Pelican cases on my roof - the aluminum roof deflected without damaging anything as I pulled into a parking spot but I couldn't get out. I looked like an absolute moron.

Sorry but I have no idea how to remove the spoiler. It feels like you can almost remove it just by yanking hard on it, though (mine is a bit loose). I'd like to know how it's mounted too so I can maybe tighten it up.

I opened the back window and it appears to only be held on by the 2 outer 10mm bolts. Ours has been loose feeling since we got it. There might be a 3rd under the plastic cover, I’ll know Thursday for sure lol

I found a PDF of how to remove a 2024 Land Cruiser spoiler on the Land Cruiser forums. Lots of complaints there with them being loose as well. Doesn’t look too hard. Unsnap the cover unsnap the wiring harness for the 3rd brake light, and remove 6 bolts, close the window and slide it off.

@Gator were you ever able to remove the rear spoiler assembly? (curious as we had a similar incident and need to pop it off as well)

This video will show you how to remove it. It is for the Land Cruiser but the same concept. I had to remove to install the Westcott ladder.

I need to replace my cover as well. Does is snap off or is it screwed in the sub assembly? If ti snaps off how does that work?

The cover just pops off (I was careful and used a pry tool for leverage).

The instructions @Gator posted earlier in this thread were very helpful if you need to replace the entire rear spoiler. Only took me a total of 45 minutes to replace the entire unit!

Holy crap!!! I did the same thing 2 days ago. All kinds of beeps going off but I guess I ignored the important one. Loud bang then door auto closed. Really need an voice alarm saying Idiot! Idiot! Idiot!! Scratch marks in same place though not quite as big. Waxed to buff out what I could. Gonna catch a tree on the trail anyway. Moving on.

I recently reversed into a low tree branch which only hit the rear spoiler. Not much damage to the finish but the underside plastics where the brake light is housed shattered. Looks like I have to purchase a whole new spoiler which is expensive? Anyone had any luck getting just that underside plastic part as a spare?

What is really odd is I used that same LC video posted above and unless I am crazy, my 2026 Overtrail was not the same setup with the 6 bolts under the cover as shown in the video. I was only looking to run wire for my Wolfbox rear cam and wasn't a big enough deal to remove, but I swear mine wasn't the same and just figured the GX was different in that regard. Seeing someone else say it worked is gonna make me have to go mess with it again at some point.
