Looking for some advice from the group on what I should be asking the dealership to inspect or replace after what happened to my 2024 GX 550 Luxury yesterday.
I brought my GX to the Lexus dealership for the 25,000-mile service, which included a tire rotation. I also had the oil changed.
After picking it up, I pulled onto the highway and once I got up to around 25–30 mph, the front end started shaking badly, the steering wheel was vibrating hard, and the GX was pulling hard to the left. I immediately turned around and headed back to the dealership.
As I turned off the highway into the dealership driveway, the left front of the GX suddenly dropped to the ground. I got out thinking I had blown a tire, but the entire driver’s-side front wheel had come off. There were NO lug nuts on the wheel studs. The GX was sitting on the driver’s-side front rotor/brake area, and the wheel was wedged underneath the wheel well.
My concern now is possible damage beyond just the wheel and lug nuts. The wheel was obviously loose and wobbling while I was driving, and then the full weight of that corner of the GX dropped onto the rotor/brake/suspension area when the wheel came off.
For those of you familiar with the GX 550, especially anyone with Lexus/Toyota technician or mechanical experience, what would you insist the dealership inspect or replace before accepting the vehicle back?
I’m thinking at minimum they need to thoroughly check the wheel and lug holes, studs, hub/wheel bearing, rotor, caliper, brake hose, ABS sensor, steering knuckle, tie rod, ball joints, control arms, CV axle and suspension components. I also plan to ask for a full four-wheel alignment with before-and-after measurements and a complete scan of the ABS/VSC/EPS systems.
I’m also concerned about the possibility of damage that may not be obvious during a visual inspection, particularly to the hub/bearing, steering or suspension components.
Would you insist on replacing the hub/bearing and rotor after an event like this even if they appear OK? Anything else specific to the GX 550 front suspension or drivetrain that I should have them check?
I want to make sure I cover everything before I accept the GX back from the dealership.
