I bought a classic car in a town a few hours away and my plan is to drive to that town and do a one-way rental back with a U-Haul Car Trailer and my 1970 Mach 1. I've been doing a little reading and it sounds like there are some challenges with the hitch on the back of the Overtrail. I see some people say that you need a special longer pin that is difficult to insert due to the recessed design of the trailer hitch on the GX.

Has anyone just gone into a typical U-Haul rental store and used their standard equipment to tow a trailer? I am fearful that I will drive 300+ miles and then not be able to get the ball mounted properly in the 2" trailer hitch on my GX.

Has anyone already gone this route??? I would appreciate input.

Thanks!

A standard pin can be used but you may need to remove the hitch cover and black trim ring to insert it if it's a bit long. I have a short pin that I can insert just by pulling the black trim out a little bit.

Great, thank you. I will take that cover off before I drive there.

I believe any standard Class 5 pin for a 2.5 inch receiver will work, but pins for a 2 inch receiver are too short. From comments in the Tundra forum, it looks like pins for 2.5 inch receivers are ever so slightly too long, meaning it could rattle a little bit, but it's perfectly safe. Full service UHauls (that will actually have pins you can buy) should have lots of those pins available - I believe they're super standard for 2500 pickups.

The receiver itself is 2 inches, but is double walled, so you need to step up to the longer pins for 2.5 inch receivers.

Alternatively, it looks like the genuine Lexus pin, part # PT2280C231, is quite affordable at less than $10.

Here are some options. I use the locking one and its great. I still remove the surrounding shroud for more access to the chain hook ups. Factor 55 makes great stuff.
