(NonameX’s rig)
So NoNameX (the Robert Peary of our collective) invited fellow travelers to join on a California to Colorado GX adventure to explore the San Juan Mountains.
I freed up my schedule, but unfortunately, my wife has a bad knee and did not want to sit in the car for 32 hours getting there and back.
I looked into other options, including having my GX delivered to a Toyota dealership close to Carbondale, but that ended up being not viable due to cost ($5000 to CO and back to SLO).
And then I started thinking outside the box..
The workaround I was able to find was that since Turo rents privately owned vehicles, once a reservation is made (24 hours to cancel), you are able to contact the owner and discussed details of your rental.
My particular case I reached out to Jimmy with Alpine Imports (via a Turo reservation in Denver), who authorized use of his vehicles for “off road trail use” just NO ROCK CRAWLING. This worked out perfectly for us, as I had no intention of bouldering with my new $100k GX anyway..
So the new plan is to fly out to Denver, pick up our Defender 110 rental at the airport, and drive 3 hours to meet up with NonameX and his wife.
We won’t be driving a GX - but I think a newer Defender 110 comes in as close second. Again it’s not about the gear, it’s about the experience.
If anyone is interested in joining thr convoy for a segment of the Alpine loop (August 29-Sept 5th), DM myself and NonameX.
Kinda cool that the Defender matches or comes close to Mica Green like NoNameX’s rig..
