I have had a deposit for a 2025 GX since September 2024. After reading all the problems on this and another GX forums I am seriously considering cancelling my GX order. I am really disappointed since I found this vehicle after a 3 year search for a replacement for my Mercedes ML500 suv. I really like the GX and the Toyota quality reputation but it's hard to ignore the problem risks.

No one can fault you for thinking that. But keep in mind it is a first model year, which will always have more bugs than normal. I’ve had mine for 3.5 months and 2100 miles and no issues other than brake squeal. Good luck with whatever you decide to get.

Same here. I got mine (Luxury) in Oct (2K miles now) and no issues so far.

We were worried too. We got on the list December 2023, and finally took delivery July 25th and zero issues with our OT. I mean zero. 3500 mile round trip from TX to PA over the holidays and fell even more in love with the thing from the Texas heat, through all types of highways, to the snow up north central PA at our camp in the middle of the state forest. Next stop is Yankee Boy Basin and Alpine Loop next summer in CO.

If you believe everything you read in car forums you would wonder if any car even starts.

Reality is people hit forums when they have problems. It’s never a representative population.

The fact of the matter is tens of thousands of owners have no complaints about their GX’s

9200 miles with brake squeal in reverse. Very slight hood flutter. This vehicle is rock solid in my opinion. Overtrail+ incognito/black roof. Brakes will be fixed at 10k service. If these are the only problems I have in a first year production run then I’m thrilled! My wife drives a 23 GX 460 which is wonderful in its own way.

Thing is the thousands that love the vehicle don’t post or complain. Only the ones that are stressed by a warrantied hood flutter and brake squeal. Or the ones that didn’t realize that their buying a truck with an off road and towing priority., electric trailer brakes 3/4 ton payload capacity. It’s not an Escalade, Grand Wagoneer, X7, Navigator or LX. It’s a GX with a utilitarian interior and niche purpose. May or may not be for you.

@Mike'sGX: Before you pull back your deposit on the GX 550, I invite you to check out forums for any other new vehicle you may be considering. As previously stated, the vast majority of folks with no issues don't post any content here. Also, consider that several forum members who post negative content do not even own the GX550. I am proud to own the GX550 and it is an absolute pleasure to drive.

Let's look at the numbers:

- 1,570 members on this forum to date
- over 33,000 units delivered worldwide to date

This means that the issues expressed on this forum represent approximately 4.7% of ALL Lexus GX550 owners. Not statistically significant from a pure number perspective.

Cancel it

show me a car that didn't have any first-year issues. What problems are scaring you away?
One is the reported engine problems.
Another is the cracked windshield issue.
The squeaking brake issue doesn't bother me too much.
Forcing needles options that I don't want or need.
Fluttering hood issues isn't a deal breaker but point to poor design.
Possibility I can't get the paint color I want

Several other reported issues that individually wouldn't be a problem but all added together indicates overall poor quality builds.

I’ve owned more cars and trucks than I like to admit. I’m also a total a Type A person.
My Overtrail now has 9k miles and I love driving it. The first drive-of-the morning brake squeal was a minor irritant but Lecys quickly acknowledged the problem and the replacement parts took care of that.

Great vehicle.

  • Engine - There have been no large or small scale issues with the engine in the GX which is manufactured in Japan. The earlier V35A Engines had the problem.
  • Windshield — Upright windshields will have this problem depending on driving conditions, but they are not spontaneously cracking due to a manufacturing or model issue.
  • Brakes - If you get a new build, the brakes should already be updated with the newer parts
  • Options - There aren't many options to begin with, but that goes for any Lexus or Toyota model. Doesn't help that this model flies off the lot without the dealers having to do much. ADM is another story
  • Hood - I don't have any hood fluttering issues and doesn't seem like all cars have this issue
  • Paint - that is just a matter of patience and diligence.

Again, with only a small percentage of owners on the forums, You will likely hear from all the ones having issues. If you read enough on any car forum, using that metric, all cars would be of poor build quality.

I keep seeing this cited as the explanation for the GX not being affected. But it’s not the reason, since it wouldn’t explain why the LX (which is manufactured in Japan) is subject to the same recall.

From the NHTSA recall report: This recall covers vehicles equipped with V35A engines of a particular configuration that were manufactured during a certain period at particular engine plants. V35A engines of this configuration, manufactured after this production period, were manufactured with new or improved processes that better clear machining debris.

The reason the GX engine shouldn’t be a problem isn’t because of where it was manufactured, but when.
