I've been wrapping my GX in plastic, then canvas tarps, the water proof tarps to protect the canvas. Recently I've left in inside a large bag charged with Argon to preserve the vehicle. By doing that and not driving it - it still looks brand new....assuming I can even see it with all that stuff on it.

I'll share a reason to use the steps. I'm 6"0, and stepping up or getting out of my premium plus, I put a lot of stress on the seat bolster - I squish it scooting in or sliding out. Certainly on my previous car (4runner Limited/leather) the bolsters took a beating, and that was a lower vehicle. Using the step really keeps the wear down on the bolster, and I'd rather have nice seats than steps. Take this with a grain of salt, since I'm not too particular about keeping the exterior of my trucks perfect....

I bet the dealership service guys have a form of bingo they play everyday for this sort of stuff.

Oh, I am sure I am like the monkey in the cage to them.

"hey Jimmy, where is this fool who saran wraps his car before letting us work on it?"

"hey Billy...I hid an open can of tuna under his passenger seat"

"hey Fred... you see the dummy sitting in the waiting room? That's the fool with the GX who asked us not to step on the "STEP" rails"

Trust me...I own it :)

(P.S.) There is a story about my OCD and love of automobiles. Maybe one day I'll tell it here.

I like to keep my radio's volume knob scratch-free and fingerprint-free . So i dont bother to use the radio either.
I use the steering wheel volume control for that very reason.

If I owned a shop, you would be the type of customers I would avoid at all costs.

See, that is where I have experienced the exact opposite. Most of the shops I deal with the technicians love their cars too. Want to keep them as nice as they can for as long as they can. Plus, I always tip them. Lexus oil change, they get $40 bucks. My sales gal, Melissa... $200-$300 every time I buy a car from them because I am pretty picky on how I want it delivered. Sucks that people feel like that have to "avoid" someone who doesn't want their car damaged or treated in a way they they don't want. But, I also get it. I am very self aware of my issues so I make sure to OWN them and communicate well. If you want to "avoid" me...well then, I don't want to do business with you either and because it's a free market I can avoid a mechanic that can't treat my possessions the way I want them treated and you have the right to pick and choose who you want your target customers to be. WIN/WIN :)

Why don’t you consider treating the steps as disposable? Use them as much as you want and replace them every year or two…

That's a great point... I have painted my front bumper before on cars where they get all chewed up from road debris as well I have "often" replaced a windshield that becomes too pitted from same debris.

Would love to hear it.

I think it is crazy not to use the side steps for any number of reasons. (I actually forced myself to get in the habit of using them so that I don't slide my bum across the seat and wear out the bolster. And I figure once I damage them off-roading, I will justify the upgrade to rock sliders anyway.) But I find your self-awareness to be entertaining. To each their own.

I love cars too, but you are going overboard. You are the type of person who will complain if there is a bug splat on your bumper after a test drive.

I bet you have all your original plastic wrapping on all your electronics.

Different level of love then. And no, I wouldn't complain... I'd simply clean it. Scratch my car, ding my car, scuff my car during service...yep, we now have a problem. I get joy in the cleaning process as well. Very cathartic for me.

Also, nope. I don't have the plastic on anything... but I do insist they DO NOT PDI the car as I like to do the birthing/unwrapping myself. I want to be #1 :)

My dad is a car collector... and my entire relationship with him revolved around cars, cleaning them, car shows, and everything cars. So my relationship with cars is a bit different than most people.

Would love to hear it.

Mostly about what my entire relationship with my father as a young person revolved around, which was cars. I also decided at a young age that I never wanted the responsibility of having kids and never did so my possessions, my houses, my cars, my watches, my guns are more important to me than people who have the responsibility of raising and caring for kids who are most likely the most important thing to them and put "stuff" which I refer to as "crap" (material garbage) secondary or well below more important things in their lives.

OK, now I am getting way more personal than ANYONE wants to hear...but, it will help those out there understand where I am coming from...maybe.
