GX550 Hybrid engine

I think the GX will go down as an iconic vehicle over time. The initial owners (Us) get to experience the beauty of snapping necks wherever you drive. It's unique and still rare enough. I have seen about 4 GXs in the past 4 months, albeit I've seen them multiple times. I have 3 TXs in my neighborhood and I don't feel anything when I look at them. The GX is purpose built and I absolutely love it for it. It makes me feel like I am driving an old-school off-road vehicle with all of the techs an amenities anyone could ever want. People ask me about it all the time.

I don't think those vehicles can be compared tbh. There is really only 1 direct competitor to the GX and it's probably just the Defender. The GX is also very much an emotional purchase for most because it's not really a great choice if you're daily driving it and it's all you use it for.

Depending on if the US does receive the GX Hybrid, I am curious what the pricing will be because the entire line up is so bunched up between the GX, 4Runner, and Landcruiser. At some point, the LC may be obsolete unless you like the looks of the LC vs a GX.
Well said, and I think that is where I am stuck with this whole GX thingy. My family truck is my daily driver (the C8 is a weekend toy for summer only). I often take it downtown to work, and once a year drive around 1000+ miles between Montreal and Wildwood NJ.

On top of that I need this thing to fit in underground parking, and it is too tall for most underground downtown parking.

I also fill up the VW Atlas with regular gas and not premium.

I have always wanted something a little more sporty or luxurious, and if money was no object, would probably be driving an Escalade V or IQ, so looking for something cool to own and drive. And I find the GX checks some of those boxes.

Just wondering if the honeymoon period will wear off quickly when filling up that gas tank often with premium fuel, and struggling to park it anywhere other than an outer parking space.

The only other truck I am waiting to see if/when it comes out is the corvette SUV rumoured for this year.

I get what you're saying. Some of this is anecdotal as I came from a full-size Toyota Tundra that averaged about 15mpg on the highway. Doing the same stretch, I can get 20 with the GX. I find the GX to be very comfortable and quiet - I do see people on Facebook groups complain about comfort because they came from unibody vehicles expecting it to ride like a cloud. Again, it's all relative. I've owned a GX470 and 2 4Runners before the Tundra, so the BOF was something I am accustomed to and the GX does an amazing job riding the way it does considering the architecture. It rides sporty compared to a GX460 but probably not going to give you the confidence to squat down in the corners.

I do see your point about underground garages tho, that would be a big deterrent if parking if tougher to find and you'd drive it every day. In my area, the GX is nimble because our roads here are built to accommodate big trucks. Side note: pretty sure an Escalade will be taller than a GX in case the parking situation is a deciding factor.

I am a Corvette owner myself (C6) and drive the GX most days to run errands. The mpg is not great around town but I knew that. I had not heard about the Corvette SUV but it sounds like sacrilege to me : )

The one upside is that the GX will probably retain value really well should the luster wear out. There will still be a decent demand over the next few years.

Long range America gas tanks are coming….

There is no doubt the TX has more creature comforts, a more user friendly interior especially for folks with children, better gas mileage and much easier ingress and egress compared to the GX.
But the two vehicles are meant for different tasks and with different owner needs in mind.

There are a few things however that make the GX stand out.

1. Made in Japan
The TX is made in Indiana, mainly from parts from outside Japan
2. Handsome looks that make it stand out in the sea of SUV's ; perhaps one of the handsomest SUV's on the planet.
3. Ability to provide unparalleled ability off road while providing exemplary comfort on the road.
4. Pride in ownership that will make you turn around and look at it as you leave it standing parked.
5. Onlookers will gaze at it admiringly. What is the price of that for the owner? That people like it without even knowing about all the goodness that makes it so desirable.
6. You will take so many pictures of it, in various lights, various locations. Almost like the way you take pictures of your beautiful children! :D
What killed the TX off my list was the driver seat in the TX500h. It felt tight and restraining. I’m 5’8 thin, and found them quite uncomfortable. It’s an odd design choice for a vehicle of this nature and size despite the fsport flare. On the other hand, the GX seats are spacious and relaxing.

For everyone wondering about the power train for the GX550 hybrid, here is a video from Hong Kong and it shows the GX550H. You can clearly see the badge on the back and the engine sounds exactly like the LC250, which they also have in this video.

Thanks for this. I drove the LC LC and the interior felt really nice, love the smartly designed console layout and the exterior design is beautiful. I think Toyota delivered an outstanding product with the LC as both a daily driver and an awesome off roader. But seeing the 4cylinder hybrid in the GX, a low production niche luxury premium brand just blows me away, just no.
