GX550 Real World Reviews (1 Viewer)

Pretty much every car over $60k has contrast stitched leather featured on the dash. My Defenders 110s had it, my Sequoia Platinum has it. Heck, even GMC knows that it’s a minimum requirement in their Yukons. Not seeing it in my GX was almost shocking.
Think you need to raise that threshold above $100K - nearly all BMW, Mercedes, etc - do not offer leather except as part of special packages that are a very costly add. My wife's 7 series does not offer it as a standard item. I highly doubt a Yukon has anything beyond a pleather dash - or some meat by product that a starving dog would not want.

My only complaint is the tiny gas tank on a vehicle for off road use.

My review.
For us, my family, its the perfect size vehicle. Not too big, not too small. Power is good, mileage is so so, not that great of range, 275-300 per tank. We come from years for 4runners so this is to be expected. Daily driving it is great, comfort is very good. It is solid, secure, and a very good AWD system. Looks are great, that is more personal, so you decide. Infotainment is decent, nothing crazy, but is has enough to make most all folks happy with levels of tech/safety. Remote start is great, in that is stays running when you unlock or open a door. Not all Toyota gets this memo. Daily workhorse for family and kids we love it. What is not to love is maybe the lack of storage inside, it just does not have enough areas to hide stuff, hold stuff, or set stuff. The phone charger does not like the bigger phones, its too sensitive in placement. The Boring colors offered, sorry we do not need so many greys and bland colors, my opinion. Lexus dealer is a far cry from BMW dealers we have dealt with, leaves a lot to desire. Ours was pretty early on, had the squeaky brakes, and the dealer looked at us like we were crazy for questioning why the brakes sound like a John Candy car, how dare you question the mighty Lexus. Luckily, after some persuasion and a call to field rep, they confirmed "Lexus, we have a problem".
If you are here or surfing the useless Youtube video reviews, we all do it, you may wonder is there a better rig? I really do not think so, this is the one vehicle Toyota/Lexus does right. The 4th Gen 4runner was the same, we could only dream of having that 4.7 in this machine. But I believe this is a fantastic rig, worth the cost, should last, and has a great AWD system.
Hope this helps.

New Long term view from SavageGeese released 12/8/25

I think prospective buyers should spend the time to watch this one. Really great assessment by Jack, with Mark as a solid "no" on the GX. I have seen enough Facebook posts and threads here to know that a large number of buyers don't know what they are getting when signing up for the GX.

I didn't see Mark as a solid no. He said if you are liking unibody vehicles then no. Interesting that they say it feels big. I have seen multiple reviewers say that for a large vehicle it feels small when driving. Different perspectives I guess.

My assessment too.

I feel it drives precisely for a vehicle it's size and something that felt different compared to the LC250 that I rented for a week.

I think they hit it on the head. It is a Lexus truck. It feels like a very refined version of a mid sized pick up truck IMO. It is not a unibody SUV. Comparing it to an X5 feels like you would be better off determining the requirements you have for a vehicle. I am not a unibody SUV hater but if you want driving dynamics, get a sports sedan or a wagon. If you want people hauling a minivan. Utility a BOF.

Engine issues aside, we are quite happy with the GX. I will say it becomes a special vehicle in the back country. The off-road systems and durability set it apart from any competitor outside the LC250 at it price. On road, it drives like a truck and I like that about it. But I used to drive a pick up and I was missing that before we got the GX.

He did a good job with who it works for, but for him, "it ain't me" at 9:49.
