OEM Crossbars w/ ski rack creates loud drumming sound - any solutions for ski racks?

Hi Folks,

New here. Purchased a 2024 Premium plus about a month ago. We are mostly happy but having some issues with the crossbars. I've seen it brought up in a few other forums but didn't see this specific issue addressed and hope this forum can help! Our car has the flush rails with OEM crossbars. We are up in ski country and the primary purpose of this vehicle in winter is to get the family (4 humans) up to the ski hill. I've noticed the crossbars are loud at highway speeds (+60mph). As a point of comparison they are significantly louder than the crossbars (OEM and Thule) I've had on previous Audis and VWs, but it's mostly loud wind noise and manageable. I recently mounted a new ski rack (Thule snowpack extender - 6 pair skis) and +55mph the noise becomes a very loud drumming sound. This is not wind noise that you could ignore by turning up the radio but a drumming that I could hear and feel in a my ear drums. After 1 drive up the hill my wife had me remove the rack because it gave her a headache. I tried an older ski rack I used to have on another car (Thule 724 - 3 pair) and this rack works slightly better, however, it still causes a drumming +75mph. I've driven that ski rack +100 mph on previous vehicles with no noise issues, and I have owned any number of Thule/Yakima ski racks in my lifetime and never had an issue like this.

What I have noticed: There is some inherent play in the crossbar. It can rock back and forth about 2mm each way in the foot/mount that attaches to the flush rail. The old Thule 724, by virtue of its design, I can screw it down in a way that it clamps down on the footer/mount which slightly reduces this play. Perhaps that's a reason for lessened drumming, or maybe its just because the rack is half the size. Hard to tell. I tried to rock the OEM bar on my VW (manufactured by Thule) and there is zero play in that bar - it doesn't move at all in the feet/mounts. Could this be part of the noise issue? I poked around and haven't found a way to tighten this linkage between the crossbar and the foot. to note, the connection of the foot to the flush rail is secure and there is no play there.

Net-net: Has anyone here had any luck with ski racks and mounted them successfully without this drumming sound? Do other folks have this play in their cross bar, and/or found a way to tighten it? Any fixes that have reduced the noise of the OEM crossbars? Are there any aftermarket crossbars (not whole racks) that would work? Given the specifity of the mount I'm not optimistic Thule or Yakima will develop a solve? My preference would be to not wrap paracord as it's not going to work to unwrap the ski rack each time I want to use it and I'd rather not go with a whole box (personal preference, partial to rack over box) nor would I want to purchase a box just to find that I have the same issue with noise.

Thanks for your time!

I'm reading a lot of people have taken off their factory roof racks and cross bars due to excessive noise and vibration. I'm waiting to see if Lexus or anyone can get this issue resolved before deciding whether or not to buy this car. I'm a big skiier. I have the Yakima Skybox 18 mounded on cross bars on my current car (Acura RDX)..... a little bit more wind noise but nothing excessive.

I think the solution is going to be that Lexus needs to adjust the design, or you will have to find aftermarket solutions. Yakima makes an "aero" crossbar.. I'm not sure if it would fit on your GX though.

I'm waiting to see whether these issues get resolved before deciding to buy this car or not, it would be a deal breaker for me to not be able to carry my skybox or other items on the roof without excessive noise and vibration.

If it were me, I would try a wind fairing to see if that solved the problem. I might want to build my own to test if the solution works before buying something that looks better.

Or something like this: Amazon.com

the noise is caused by this specific roof rack and rails provided by Lexus. There are many aftermarket options (cheaper and more functional than what you will get from Lexus) that don't have these issues. It's silly to not buy a car because of a factory accessory.

There are lots of GX's coming in without the racks and crossbars. If you are luckily, some dealers can request to have it removed at port so you don't have to pay for it.

Thanks gvan, the Toyota rack might be a solution.

Ideally I was hoping for lighter weight solution than a full rack - does anyone know of any aftermarket crossbar-only solutions? I don't know of any that would work with flush rails that comes with the Prem/Lux models. I imagine that most aftermarket bars should fit the raised rails that come on the Overtrail. Could you swap out the flush rails that come on the Prem/Lux models with the Overtrail raised rails, and then use the aero crossbars from Yakima/Thule/Rhino etcs? Anyone tried this?

Question for anyone with the OEM crossbars on the Prem/Lux - does your crossbar move in the feet/have a lot of play? I suspect that movement might be a cause of the noise and I'm curious if this is an issue in all the OEM bars or just mine.

Cheers!

edit: @deadlikeme, I did consider a fairing but it would go over the moonroof, and Ideally I'd like to avoid blocking that. But yes, I'd lose the view if I could carry skis/gear without excessive noise

Here's a video of the movement of the crossbar in the footer. Wondering if others that have the OEM bars installed are experiencing this movement?

That's a lot of play on the crossbars. Might want to discuss with your dealer and/or Lexus?

I am waiting on Thule or Yakima to release a set of aftermarket cross bars and clamps for the 550. Someone on the forum mentioned that they (Thule) are working on it. I currently have OEM platform rack and although it looks cool on the Costco and WholeFoods run, it's noisy on the highway. I had good experience with Thule crossbars on other vehicles, they are very quiet.

I looked at wind farings, but like you said, it ends up sitting on the sunroof but maybe it could be a trade off for you for ski season? I installed paracord on my rack and it reduced the wind noise significantly but did not eliminate it, still a nuisance.

Try paracord on the crossbar and not the actual ski rack to see if it helps with wind noise?
