I certainly could think of more lucrative side hustles with less liability. But it’s nice that there are a few out there that people can experience and enjoy for a few days (on pavement).
Fly, rent on Turo, and drive has been a go to for me over the past few years when a sports car catches my fancy.
I almost bought a new corvette ZO6 and then E-ray. But then getting my wiggles out in a regular c8 convertible for $125 per day on the 89A, and on another visit to Lake Las Vegas with the wife, made me realize it was NOT something I needed (with two Porsches in the garage).
Many may find the same calculus with regard to a $95k Lexus GX 550. Maybe

just renting one for a week or two a couple times a year may be enough… low gas

️ costs… no insurance or maintenance costs.. and you still get the full driving experience.
Now, when an owner is amenable, this fly-rent-drive approach has also become my go to for off-pavement motoring in dramatic but distant locations (when a Turo owner is amenable to renting out their higher clearance 4x4 - as was the case on our 2026 fly and drive experience in CO.)
Tip for anyone flying in to Denver and wanting to rent a 4x4 and explore the Alpine loop: get permission from the owner (in writing) and rent an Ineos Grenadier. Out the door, they are higher clearance than other available vehicles and owners are more likely to allow you to take them on less rocky trails. If you want to reach “Jimmy” directly at Alpine Imports his number is 303-434-9634, and will likely give you a discount if you mention the Lexus forum.
