Winter tire sizes (2 Viewers)

I get to traverse a fair bit of sketchy mountain terrain and studded tires are a non-negotiable for winter when dealing with backcountry roads.

Planning to run 285/70/17 for summer with Toyo Open Country AT3s.

Would you run the same size for a studded tire in the winter? Or would you go into a 265/70/17 or 265/75/17 or 265/70/18? I worry a bit about snow penetration with a wider tire but still want to minimize my speedometer differences yet keeping a great look. Considering Michelin X-ice 4 or thE Nokian HakkaPeliitta 10.

Personally, I'd go with a skinnier tire for the winter and stick with 18" to use the stock wheels
