Decided to try one of the 3D-printed magnetic phone mounts where the base mounts in the 12-volt plug in that weird wasted space in the center console. For the past year I've been using a magnetic charger that I stuck on there with double-sided tape but I was kind of tired of seeing the cord and having the extra cord hanging down into the passenger footwell.

The new mount works pretty good - it's a bit loose in the 12-volt plug and the phone flops around a bit. Of course you can only get the apple iphone magsafe charger in white and I couldn't abide by a white cord on my black dash so I took matters into my own hands.

The old setup:

I was trying to do the same set up... Apple magnetic charger and the 3 d printed holder.... Unfortunately, when I plug in the charger, I'm told it is not a supported accessory.....

Anyone else have that problem and where you able to fix it? Tried two different chargers to make sure that wasn't the issue.

I recall that the 3D-printed holder listed 1 very specific apple charger. I didn't have that same charger - I had an older white apple magnetic charger that's been on my office desk for a few years. I just used that one because I also knew it worked in the Lexus.

I've seen the unsupported device message before with other chargers used around the house, but never seen it while trying to charge in the Lexus.

I hated the white contrast as well and thought the sticker looked janky- after buying several black mag safe chargers to see if any of them fit, this is the one that fits and looks best imo.
Note: You'll need to take a Dremel (or something similar) and ream out the ID of the 3D printed mount to make it seat properly. It's only a few thou of material that needs to be removed. Ensure you're evenly moving across the material so you don't introduce eccentricity.

The old white apple mag charger I used also didn't quite fit in the 3D printed holder so I had to use a dremel to remove some material. And I painted the cord black. I think I'll take it back out and paint the mag part black too because the sticker is peeling up. Or I could just buy the one you linked...but I'm in pretty deep on this white one so I might as well continue down the rabbit hole.

Thank you. I've ordered it and will try it out as soon as the GX gets out of the shop after being side swiped by a semi (no one was hurt!).

What are you using to attach the charger disk to the vehicle?

Same 3D printed mount from Fuel & Fire that others have used - hence the need to do a bit of trimming as the mount is made for Apple's magsafe disk. The disk I linked to in the previous post adheres to Apple's magsafe protocol (no charge errors) but the physical dimensions differ slightly than Apple's disk. After reaming out the ID, it's a clean pressure fit into the mount's pocket. Hopefully that makes sense.

What do you mean - 'reaming out the ID' is there something behind the mount that prevents it from snapping in?

It’s a slightly larger diameter circle than the very specific apple charger that the 3D mount is made for. Therefore you have to remove a tiny bit of plastic from the ID or inner diameter where the charging disk snaps into place. I used an older apple mag charger and I also had to shave a tiny tiny amount (prob less that 1 mm) from the ID.

According to my recent email exchange with F&F, an all black version of this product, with built-in black charger and short black cord, may be available in Fall.

I chose the JW Offroad bumper for the following reasons:
  • The winch fairlead is a bit higher on JW's vs. other bumpers - some more options are available now but the main competitor at the time was the Victory 4x4 bumper. If you compare JW to Victory, the fairlead on JW is where the light bar is on the Victory. I wanted the fairlead up as high as possible to help keep it from getting stuffed in dirt/mud, on rocks, etc. and it's just easier to access.
  • Cutting for installation - minimal on the JW, about the same for the Victory, considerable cutting needed for the Dissent. Of course you get more ground clearance with the Dissent but I'm not building a rock crawler here.
  • General appearance - the JW is plain Jane without all the frills and fancy logos on some of the others.
  • Price is also an important consideration - JW is only $1550 powder coated.
  • Regarding the winch, I wanted a 12k and since they are all basically the same internals now, I tried something new with the Overland Vehicle Systems SCAR 12k winch. I am very happy with the OVS 180-degree awning so I gave them some repeat business. Price was right too. Can't really comment on the winch as I have yet to use it. I'm doing a 4-day trip at the end of May and I'll give the winch a trial run.
Bill, what's the verdict on the winch? Thanks for the info.

Well, the winch is still there, waiting to be used. I haven't had a need or an opportunity to use it yet. I'm going camping in about 2 hours but I doubt I'll need it today/tonight. I'd experiment with it but it's just too damn hot out right now (about 115 degrees). It should get down to a chilly 90 or so tonight.

Bill, me again, do you have link on where I can purchase these lights? Ali or Amazon? I appreciate you.
The whole rear hatch light thing is a bit confusing. One of my light packages (the double light that replaces the open/close keypad and shines outward) had to be wired all the way over and down to the driver's side mini-LED in the cargo area and that was a real pain. Yellow Lab found sources for both lights (the simple center hatch light and the double light) that don't require running wiring over and down into the cargo area. When I have a chance I'll try to dig up the links to both light packages.

FYI - I bought these windshield seals a few weeks ago and was blown away how much wind noise improvement it provided during our 20 hour road trip. I didn't' even adhere the stickers, just stuck them in the slots and they work PERFECT. I ordered a backup set, just in case. That's how much I love them.

What works well is the center light installs to the controller for the door latch - if you get the one for the power door. Then the two the bottom of the tailgate install and I powered the left side by splicing into the center. Here are the links to the ones I bought:

@YellowLab do you have a link with the easier install for the 2 light? Thank you in advance.

Yeah. my family and I were in AZ last weekend. Went to the Red/White practice. Thank goodness it's a domed stadium w good AC. But walking to and from the truck was super hot and gross lol.

Thanks for following up.
