Auto Climate System question.

All of the other cars that I have driven and owned I always leave my auto climate between 68-70 in the winter which will keep me comfortable. That is in Audis, Hondas, VWs, and Teslas. If I set it to 68 in the GX550 it is like a sauna. I notice I have to keep it between 64-65 for the same comfort as my other cars. Has anybody else notices in the winter the display seems to be on the warmer side? I also noticed that my outside temp sensor said it was 34 degrees when it was really 23 degrees outside. Wondering if that might have anything to do with it? Doubt it. Just seems like many of the sensors are a bit off. Like I said in another post it seems the speedo is off by 1-2MPH from 30-60 and then 60 and above it is off 2-3MPH. I plan on asking about this when taking it in for the 1st service. Just wanted to see if other are seeing something similar.

I haven't noticed the discrepancy with the outside temper vs. the reported temperature on the dash, but I have noticed that I have to keep the temperature on the GX climate control set about 4 or 5 degrees lower than I have in all my previous cars - Chevy, BMW, Porsche, and Chrysler. It doesn't really bother me. I don't care about actual temperature of the cabin as much as I do about it maintaining a comfortable temperature which the GX does.

Ok so you are seeing the plus 4 or 5 degrees hotter than what you had in other cars also. Assuming that will translate the same in the summer for AC. Thank you!

Constantly having to set it up and down. This is the first vehicle with auto climate control where I have to manually set the fan and thermostat to get it where we like it.

I've noticed that I need to keep it at around 65 in the GX vs 68-69 in my other vehicle for similar temperature feeling. That is with AC set to off, system to auto otherwise.

If your Lexus seems to be blowing hot air out of proportion to the temp you have set on the thermostat which is on auto, check to make sure that you do not have the passenger vents turned off. You will have to go into the setup menu to check and correct it if necessary.

Add me to the list. Its pretty hot and I set it at 68-69 and its in the 30s outside. Our old GX460 was a set and forget at 71 or so all year around. This one loves to pour out heat!

I usually have the temperature set to 73 in the winter in our other cars I have to set it to 70 in the Lexus GX 550.

The vehicle A/C system of the GX is the most difficult system I have ever run across. I have owned Toyota, Mercedes, Volvo, VW, Cheverolet, Mazda, BMW. Never as complicated as this GX.
My suggestions are for those that are extremely aggravated, like me, with this A/C Climate control system:
  • Take time to read the Owner's Manual, starting on page 413. Familiarize yourself with the "Option screen" switches.
  • Take your owner' manual with you and sit down in the car. Turn to Page 413, Front automatic air conditioning system.
  • If anyone is offended by these comments, I apologize. Stop reading and leave the comments. I only mean to try and help someone understand the "world's most complicated A/C system ever devised by Man".

  • Start your vehicle.
When I first started my GX, the seat heat, seat fan and steering wheel heat came FULL on. My buns roasted while I learned how to turn them off. They got hot - quickly.
  • Make sure your seat heat and steering wheel heat is OFF when you start your vehicle by "touching" the seat and steering wheel indicators until NO ORANGE heat indicator is lit.
  • Look at "C" , Option Screen switch- Open the Climate Option switch panel by touching "Climate".
  • Look for "S-Flow" switch - MAKE SURE YOU TURN IT OFF BY "TOUCHING"
  • When you set all the switches to OFF, Close the Climate panel.
  • Set the Auto Temperature control setting on the temperature control knobs A and G.
  • If you want to control the temperature with the left knob, A, then "touch" the Sync switch F, top of the panel on the right.
  • If you want to manually control the A/C, touch "AUTO" and then touch the fan control J, and slide it left or right to change fan speeds.
  • If you want to recirc manually the cabin air, then "touch" the Recirc switch, I.
  • I leave the A/C in AUTO, temperature, knob set to 70 degrees and Sync is ON.
The A/C in my vehicle works well now that I have learned how to control it and set the switches. The S-Flow switch occasionally turns itself ON - I don't know what turns it on. That is going to be a question for the Lexus dealer when I go for the 6 mo/5000 mi. freebie.
The S-Flow switch is the setting that looks for people sitting in the seats. Pg. 415 has a description of the S-FLOW feature. If you leave it ON, chances are the flow of air will be low and inadequate. As soon as I turned my S-Flow OFF, air flow picked up and went to both driver and passenger sides and remains very functional/responsive to temperatures inside the car - as long as S-Flow is OFF. I almost drove back to the dealer to say if the GX can't do better with A/C they can have their car back. In Coastal Carolina, we use A/C almost year 'round. The air flow was EXTREMELY INADEQUATE.
I have learned to always open the Climate settings and make sure all the switches are set to OFF.
Ensure the transmission control is in NORMAL NOT ECO. The ECO light will NOT come on if the "NORMAL" transmission is selected.
"Touch" the "Auto" pressure sensitive button and verify the pressure sensitive indicator is "lit" and the very small blue light is "lit". You may see the far right A/C (switch H) pressure sensitive indicator light up and the blue light above it "light up".
During times when you would rather NOT RUN the A/C compressor, i.e. colder weather, there is a switch you can set to NOT TURN ON the compressor when you press the AUTO button, Letter L in the owner's manual, page 413.
To turn off the compressor manually, just touch the A/C switch, letter H.
To turn ON the compressor if it isn't on with the Fan running, just touch the A/C switch, letter H. Provides an options for running the fan without running the compressor. If you want to.
