There must be something that kicks up the mileage of a subset of GX owners… you can only be so light on the gas..

It’s an off shoot of that post (the one I started on “best drive modes” ) … I didn’t check our Panamanian friends calculations… but it sparked an argument for “an octane factor”…

I’m interested in finding a local spot that sells higher octane fuel than Costco (91) and seeing if there isn’t an incremental increase in mileage. JUST curious …. I wonder when Toyota or any manufacturer for that matter posts their fuel consumption on any particular car - what fuel they utilize.

I don’t think ANY of us have gotten 21 mpg out GX’s vehicles.. which means one of 2-3 things:

1. They are using high octane “super fuel”..

2. They are operating with vehicles with lowest weight appointments and optimum conditions, in eco etc.

OR

3. They are prevaricating ….

I can reliably get 10-11L/100km, 21-23MPG with summer fuel & highway driving (calculated by hand). My wheel/tire setup is lighter than stock - saving 14 pounds a corner with forged wheels, running Toyo OC AT3 SL @ 35 psi stock size 265/70r18. I generally fill up with Costco 91.

The biggest factor for fuel economy with GX550 is speed. After getting past forty with young kids I generally drive around the speed limit (in the right lane faster than 18 wheelers), usually under 120 kph/74 mph. Anything past 115 kph/70mph and fuel economy starts dropping fast.

City fuel economy sucks, nothing can improve that.

just me usually to/from work mostly flat I-40 63 mph 36psi tires it has actually improved over time. I am a very passive driver on start / stops. roof rack removed.

What’s your general mix of city/highway/offroad?

I have a 2026 Premium+ and I'm averaging 20 combined and 22.4 highway

I have been able to average 21mpg once, just after I purchased the car, on a weekend trip where nearly all of the driving was on 55mph roads with almost no stoplights or turns. I think this car has an extreme sweet spot between 40-60mph where the speeds are high enough to cruise steadily, but low enough to avoid the excess drag & turbo usage.

Now, most of my driving is either around town or on the highway at 75+mph (or towing), so my mileage hovers around 17-18.

I got 6700 on my '25 OT. Just got back from having a couple beers with my hockey buds last night. 13 mi from the bar to home running approx. 25% town and 75% highway at 60-65. 22.3 mpg. I can't complain.

I just checked my mileage after changing tires to the KO3 275/70/18 E tires. I was averaging 18.5 mpg for mixed driving. After accounting for the larger diameter tire, I lost about 3/4 mpg. Considering the increased stability with the new tires and better off-road performance, I feel pretty good with the results. The tradeoff is well worth it.

How did you adjust for the larger diameter? Question for the math inclined, I haven't taken the time to work the calculator on this. With my 35's I seem to be running 4-5 mph faster than the speedometer when running 75 mph. Which I am assuming means the odometer is therefore under reporting miles traveled. Maybe my assumption is incorrect. If true it would mean my mpg per tank is underreporting by probably 10-15 miles per tank. Maybe a little more.

3687 miles driven since March till August...
Fuel economy has been 20L/100kms
Around 11.7 mpg in city driving..
Usable part of the tank has been exactly 65L... 17.1 gals per tank...
Driving range is around 200 miles per tank..
Stock tire size 265/70R18 toyo open country at3 OE...
32psi cold...
Same driver every day....

Picked up my 2026 P+ on August 1st, have 600 miles on it so far. Total MPG has been around 16.7-17MPG. When I am on the highway i can get 18-20MPG but the usual stop & go traffic and local driving has been bringing my average downs. Ill be happy if my tank reads 300+ miles range.

I previously posted this. Did not receive any feedback as to whether numbers are correct. "Something to keep in mind. If you move up to a taller tire, your MPG is actually a bit higher unless the odometer has been updated for the taller tire. My rough calculation is going from 265/70/18 (32.6" diameter) to 275/70/18 (33.2" diameter) increases your distance traveled by 1.84%. So if the calculation is 16 mpg, it would actually be closer to 16.3 mpg. If going from 265/70/18 (32.6" diameter) to 285/70/18 (33.7" diameter), the distance traveled increases by 3.4%. So if the calculation is 16 mpg, it would actually be closer to 16.54 mpg. Perhaps an engineer type out there can correct me if my numbers are wrong."

I’ve only found one way of getting it to post 300+ range - you can top off with 0.5 to almost 1 gallon at the pump.. and on occasion the reading will exceed 300. Apart from that, limiting weight in the vehicle, and high octane gas - not much more can be done.. to the best of my knowledge.

I did reset my MPG meter when I did a mini road trip as simply driving around town I as getting 12-12.5PMG on a good day. Since then It has decreased from a high of 22MPG down to 16.7 currently.

I def try to limit the speed and weight as best I can but overall Im happy with the vehicle, its so fun to drive!

About 4k mi on my 26 OT. OEM tires. No accessories. Run 91-93 octane from Shell/Exxon. Average about 18 - 19 on the freeway and a little over 20 if I'm on 55mph roads. About 16-17 or so around town. I've got a pretty light foot, which helps.

2026 p+. 9000 miles to date, mostly highway driving, including 75+ mph, 1600 mile trip mostly on I-25. Overall 19.7 mpg. Do not do much city driving.

Probably would be better if I kept speed down. I've seen over 21mpg for shorter trips at lower speeds.

If you have a decent trip coming up then, especially if you have larger than stock tires, why not reset your trip meters and use one of the travel apps on your phone to compare the two miles traveled readings. I would trust my app's accuracy before the odometer readings especially if I had larger tires installed. Tires also wear and the OD will then change over time affecting your distance driven.

Been having to daily the girl for the last few weeks. Getting this while averaging speeds of 70-80 including some long SoCal uphills. Can’t really complain with this amount of miles before the gas light came on. Curious though, has anyone hit 400 miles on one tank before the light needed to come on?

On your infotainment screen, hit the vehicle button (little icon shaped like a car). Find the trip information page, then a page will open up that shows your MPG. Hit the update button and it should reset your MPG meter

When I added the 34" Wildpeaks I quickly lost 1mpg. 95% of my driving in city driving, sub 60mph and my average has dropped to 14.7mpg. I'm just over 25k miles. When my wife wears out my 33" Toyos, these Wildpeaks are going on her 460 (2" lift) and I'm getting some lighter 35" tires to finish off my look.

There was a post from a member who was trying to break his own record. I believe he was getting high 300s and managed to get 400+ miles of range. Trying to find the thread but its not seeing anything, will update my comment if I find it.
