GX550 Real World MPG (4 Viewers)

I just checked my mileage after changing tires to the KO3 275/70/18 E tires. I was averaging 18.5 mpg for mixed driving. After accounting for the larger diameter tire, I lost about 3/4 mpg. Considering the increased stability with the new tires and better off-road performance, I feel pretty good with the results. The tradeoff is well worth it.
 
Lux+ stock wheels & tires breaking 300 in eco every tank, ~40 miles/day 24 highway w/a mtn pass & 16 flat city… going to see if I can crack 300 in comfort mode without a lead foot. Wonder if the LRA tanks muck with warranty 🤔
Tested full tanks on eco, comfort, normal, sport, and sport + until fuel light came on, all under roughly the same driving conditions/habits. Best was eco at ~330 miles, worst was sport + ~295. As a result I would say, "Life's too short not to drive in sport mode :cool:"
 
6-8mpg - Trails/exploring in 4 Lo
10-11mpg - Highway driving at 85-90mph
12-13mpg - City driving
15-17mpg - Driving at 50-70mph

3"/2" suspension lift, 35" tires (wheel/tires are 90lbs per corner)
 
After almost 2 years of ownership, I don't even bother looking at the mpg anymore, it's always in the teens - low teens or mid teens even with highway driving. Mostly filled with Shell V Power. I just fill up and try to enjoy the GX as is. Our other 3 liter 6 cylinder vehicle is a B58 mild hybrid - 25mpg in the city and over 30 mpg on the highway, we have been using that more than the GX lately with high gas prices.
 
Yeah - BMW puts some real magic engineering into their engines; it's astounding they can make such reliable engines with so much power, so little turbo lag, and such incredible MPG. They seem to have figured out how to make nearly physics-breaking efficiency in the real world, rather than just in the EPA test cycle.

I used to give Toyota a pass because their SUV engines were so dead reliable, but that's not really a valid argument anymore, given the V35 failures.
 
Is that what the vehicle computer is calculating, or is that what you are calculating based on actual miles and actual gas consumption?
I have a fuel monitor app that I keep track of all my gas and service. I used the number of gallons bought based upon the actual miles. Hate the small tank!
 
Stock OT, I average 16.7 to 16.9 and I have a pretty heavy foot. Hwy speed averages 80 - 85 mph regularly. No complaints.
 
So it appears that the missing data point from all of the MPG data in this thread is …. Octane… I just learned in an exchange with one of our members in Panama that he is running 95 octane, gas and getting higher mileage (19-21) than the rest of us (17 max - likely with 91 octane).

This is a common misunderstanding. 93 octane in the US is roughly comparable with fuel marketed as 99 octane in other countries. So 95 octane in Panama is (at least to my understanding) roughly equivalent to 91 octane in the US.

American fuel octane is measured by averaging the RON and MON octane measurements. Most other countries only use the RON number. Since MON tests fuel under harsher conditions, the measurement is usually lower than the RON number. If you average RON and MON, you will get a lower octane number than if you only use the RON number.

Panamanian fuel is likely not meaningfully different in octane from American fuel. Driving habits, modifications, and maintenance are almost certainly a bigger factor in MPG than octane, IMO.

Also remember that 35 inch tires are ~7% larger in diameter than factory tires, so your odometer and mpg meter will read 7% lower than actual. 17mpg divided by .93 (7% tire size correction factor) equates to just over 18mpg.

I have to admit ignorance on these finer details (outside my educational wheel house).. I suspect however that in the case of our Panamanian colleague that the octane of his local Chevron gas is actually higher given his lower fuel consumption with all other factors being similar. (He detailed them out in another post).

Duriing daily movements in city I´ve seen numbers that make me scared, between 20 to 25 L/100 kms
Which would equate to ~9-12mpg

Best Fuel tank distance was 422 kms / 67L = 6.2 kms/L in the city + a little faster routes
Which would be ~15mpg

Seems totally normal for driving mostly in stop-start city traffic. That city number is actually worse than my average mpg while towing, lol.
 
It’s an off shoot of that post (the one I started on “best drive modes” ) … I didn’t check our Panamanian friends calculations… but it sparked an argument for “an octane factor”…

I’m interested in finding a local spot that sells higher octane fuel than Costco (91) and seeing if there isn’t an incremental increase in mileage. JUST curious …. I wonder when Toyota or any manufacturer for that matter posts their fuel consumption on any particular car - what fuel they utilize.

I don’t think ANY of us have gotten 21 mpg out GX’s vehicles.. which means one of 2-3 things:

1. They are using high octane “super fuel”..

2. They are operating with vehicles with lowest weight appointments and optimum conditions, in eco etc.

OR

3. They are prevaricating ….

24 OT+ stock everything , 18k miles , still on factory tires, 91 octane highway miles. 20:9 mpg 20:0 average on computer reset about 8k miles ago
 
This might sound weird , but it´s interesting being quoted for my calculations.
Look our driving condititons are not great at all.
Speeds are pretty lower and that´s why I am able to have a higher gas mileage in the highway (50mph) is not your highway speeds, thats why my numbers will sound not transferable to your conditions.
My city driving like you saw in my other post is far worse that what your city driving is...
average speed in city is around 20-25 mph + more times than not too much bumper to bumper.
Recently with so much traffic , it has been averaging about 5 kms/l .. 20L/100kms or 11.7 mpg ... giving a range not higher than 320-330 kms or 200 miles per tank.
It´s clear toyota configured the ¨Digital fuel gauge¨ too aggresively.. when its in zero it fills up with 65 liters of fuel or 17 usable gallons... I dont know why they did that.. it causes range anxiety.
 
Hmmm 🤔 20 mpg and bone stock.. I never get better than 17 .. and I’m not a lead foot on the GX…

Another factor - are people who get 20+ MPG driving alone or is the car loaded with people / luggage etc?

There must be something that kicks up the mileage of a subset of GX owners… you can only be so light on the gas..
