Lexus GX550 vs Rivian R1S (1 Viewer)

Has anyone been weighing the options between the GX550 and the Rivian R1S? Over the weekend, I had a chat with someone who couldn't stop praising the Rivian R1S for its outstanding capabilities and features.
I have both of them, a 2024 GX550OT+ with the 2025 springs installed, and 2025 Rivian R1S Dune Edition (trimotor with off road package and tires). I have a NYTOP hybrid bumper and rock rails on the GX. I had EV Sportline put rock slider running boards on the Rivian. I've driven them both on 4,000 mile trips cross country. More offroad time in the GX, little in the Rivian. They are both great vehicles, and I like them both. For me, however, I prefer the GX. It is more amenable to owner modification and mild working on and fiddling. However, for me a big issue (and it is just me I think), I prefer the seats and way you sit in the GX to the Rivian. My wife and adult kids don't feel this way for what it is worth. As it turns out, we got the Rivian for my wife primarily, and it has turned out to be too big for the in town driving she does a good bit of. So, we are going to give it one of our kids for their use. For reference purposes, I also have a 1996 Land Cruiser I bought new back then, and I've had a series of Tesla EVs, so I have experience with both types of vehicles.
If you test drive an R1S or T, and like the way it feels, it will be a great car. The range of the air suspension for ground clearance is spectacular, and it legitimately gets the mileage that is advertised for it. PM me separately if you want any more info.

Best, M.

Not specifically Rivian, but I'm curious to see how the new Scout platform does whenever it releases(supposedly in a year or two). I like the styling a lot in the SUV and it at least has a gas generator to extend range, although I'm not sure how much it'll give you. That seems like a fantastic idea though assuming it's actually meaningful range and not just an extra 20 miles or something. That said, unless you have a secondary vehicle, seems like a big gamble since service stations won't be plentiful.

I really like the looks of the Rivian, they did a great job with the design, but I don’t trust EVs yet nor would I ever take it too far from civilization. One day they may convince me but imo that’s many years from now even for a street car. If you held a gun to my head and said buy an EV or else, I’d opt for the Rivian SUV I guess.

We are on our second Tesla M3, and are very satisfied with it. I drove our first one from Arizona to Washington 6 years ago, and charging was not an issue - just took some planning. Now there are even more Tesla charging stations. When we were looking at a replacement for our Tundra TRD Pro, we considered the Rivian. Unfortunately, we tow a 19' RV trailer on occasion, and the EV's do not do well towing, so we went with the 2025 GX OT. No regrets.
