Long Range America - Announcement (1 Viewer)

Ah I see now thanks for the feedback, yeah LRA looks like the move… wonder what the GX looks like with a spare on the rear 😅 not too interested in modifying exhaust
This is what it looks like.

Hi I have just purchased a new GX550 but the sales team says its not capable of towing and if I want to tow they will have to import a sub frame from Japan, doest that seem correct please ?

What country did you purchase a GX550 in? A hitch is standard on US vehicles.

I recall reading somewhere that the GX's made for Australia, didn't have hitches. I'd assume yours would be the same build.

It's very possible I'm wrong too.
Hi yes you could try well be correct, not sure why they wouldn't have it?

Got a chance to do some offroading over the weekend and finally test out the LRA tank. I initiated the fuel transfer the second my range on the display went to 0. I didn't time it, but seemed like it took probably 15 minutes for it to transfer the full aux tank to the main while I was driving. The fuel gauge doesn't update in real time, but it did actually periodically update without needing to shut the ignition off like LRA initially thought might be needed. Basically updated once at roughly halfway and another at some point later when it was finished, so that was a pleasant surprise. Didn't get quite back up to a full tank, but close.

Thanks for the writeup. I saw from a review that your range increases as you drive so you get a sense of what's happening in the background. Does the pump automatically shut off once the gauge shows red light? Did you calculate how much gas was transferred?

The pump did automatically shut off. It was difficult to hear it running from the front seat and just ambient noise, but kind of turning towards the rear I was able to hear it if I really listened. I'm not sure of a great way to calculate it. I kicked off the transfer when I initially hit "empty" with just the reserve left, and that's supposed to be 2-3 gallons? I plan on doing the same thing now for what is in the main tank and I will note the total gallons it takes to fill both tanks up. That should at least get a total that is within 1 gal or so I'd think.

Based on the manual you would have 3.2 gal remaining once the refuel light comes on. Perhaps you can calculate based on the range added when you started the fuel transfer. Thanks for doing this.

By the way, does the Flowmaster exhaust sound louder than OEM?

Dang, maybe I was extremely close to legit running out of gas from the main tank then. I was initially thinking the aux tank would completely refill the main assuming you didn't run it out, so that might explain it. I guess I will refill as close to when the refuel light comes on and note the total gallons it takes for both.

Yeah the flowmaster is definitely noticeably louder than stock. It adds some aggresiveness without being overbearing IMO. I personally dig it, but I'm a car guy too. I let the owner know not everyone will like that and while I haven't heard back about any plans, I would hope/think they will either offer a couple exhaust options or will be including one that is a little closer to factory.

When my range is at zero, I still have a good 3+ gallons left. I suppose that it does depend on your driving habits during that particular tank.

I've driven a good 50+ miles past "zero" and still had reserve fuel.

Now I use zero range as, "maybe I should think about driving by Costco to fill up."

hey there, I myself bought a gx550 overtrail here in Panama. What they told you is the same in mine. Panama spec does not have tow mode , does not have the points in the frame integrated hitch , nor the connector. Its based on regions.
In USA the CLaim of 9000 pounds is extremely exagerated, in other countries its only rated for 3,500 kg or 7,700, shouldnt be more than that. But ok.

I understand this is about LRA tank ,but a clip with the flowmaster on coldstart would be a nice touch to, also in WOT.

Another little update, I finally ran it down enough to do a full fill up. Everything worked normal until the last ~3 gallons and it took a little hand holding to get the last few in without it clicking off. No big deal IMO. I filled up within probably 5 miles or so of the fuel light coming on, so just taking the supposed 21.1 gal factory tank and assuming there was ~2.5 gal still in reserve, the main tank would have taken 18.6 which would leave 16.16 for the auxillary tank, so right in-line with the initial assumption.

Hey, I can try to take a video, but honestly I'm not sure you will be able to tell much. It's louder, but it's not like we're talking a V8 cold start or anything. I think it'll likely be too subtle of a difference from video to form an opinion.

Nice!

How many total miles did you travel before you did that fill-up?

every exhaust video is cool my friend. The last V8 i had at home was in 2012.

I was informed that the last few gallons going into the aux tank will be difficult because of the rising vapors. You would need to give a few minutes for the vapors to settle before any additional gas is allowed to flow in. Alternatively, you can forgo the additional fuel if time is limited.

Honestly I forgot to note my mileage at the start, but kinda feel with how different everyone drives the total range is going to swing a decent amount person to person. I do mostly city driving with short stretches on the highway outside of road trips, and I don't baby it much, so my mileage is probably pretty bad. I can top it off and keep track for this 2nd full tank though.
