Long Range America - Announcement (1 Viewer)

Hey guys, little update on the LRA tank. I just picked up my OT from them over the weekend and got a few pics. Unfortunately haven't had a chance to drive far enough to actually transfer any gas yet, but LRA did test function prior to pickup and everything should work as advertised. From speaking with the owner of LRA, they are focusing on this saddle tank that keeps the spare tire vs the one that would go in the spare location due to that being the overwhelming preference from people that have signed up on their waitlist.

He did say the tank capacity ended up being a little higher than the initial 16 gal estimate, so I'll have to run it all the way down and see what it ended up at, but sounds like it's somewhere in the 17-20 gal range. The one thing that makes it not a total direct fit is the exhaust routing. Once their kit goes to market, it will include the necessary modified exhaust. For mine specifically, I had them use a flowmaster setup that gives it some aggressiveness which I like a lot, but I know that won't be for everyone. I'm not sure if they will plan to provide different options in terms of sound/performance or not, but I gave them my feedback on it. I haven't heard when they will be available yet, but I would assume here within the next few months hopefully.

That’s awesome. Appreciate your volunteering and keeping us all updated! Can’t wait to get more details… 😊

Thanks for the writeup. It is disappointing to hear that they are focusing on the saddle tank rather than the one in the spare tire location. Main reason for the disappointment is the potential for the saddle tank to rub against the drive shaft in lifted vehicles. Not saying that this may be the case for the GX 550 but it is an issue for lifted Jeeps.

Generally speaking, I would prefer not to have anything that may rub against any drive shaft components especially on rough roads. Can you provide a photo of the dual fill point? Based on photos that I have seen the filler point is rather small so just curious if it is the same for the GX.

Thanks.

Photo looks to have the exhaust, not the driveshaft next to the LRA tank on the GX550. Looks like a clean fit.
You're correct as the drive shaft is next to the OEM main tank. I wonder if rubbing will occur when the vehicle flexes during offroad travel.

@Ctprelude 💯% Look forward to hearing about your experience. I'm on their wait list. Towing the travel trailer it would be nice to barrel past some gas station on route.
Yeah we do a lot of road trips here out West in the US where stations can be more scarce, so this will be big for me. I can't imagine there will be any issues, as LRA has been in the game a good while now and the overall function I think is essentially the same between the different vehicles.

One thing I did forget to mention above, and I haven't been able to test just yet myself, but it sounds like when you do initiate the fuel transfer while driving, your factory fuel gauge will not update in real time until you have had an on/off ignition cycle. I guess this is the same deal with the new land cruiser and is just due to the factory electronics. I'll confirm for sure here hopefully sometime this weekend when I have a chance to run it down more.

I can't really tell what part that is, the filler looks the same to me, so I'm guessing it's one of these hoses here that connects up above where I don't have a good view without disassembling stuff.

Thanks for the photos. I was looking for a photo of where you would insert the gas nozzle. Something like this,

I love it.....but this part looks like it could be painful

That needs an angled lower edge, or lose a gallon or two and raise it up a bit. I know they'll say that this aux tank hangs just as low as the stock tank, but this leading edge is asking for a major problem deep off road on a rocky trail.

Got it, here you go. Can't really see anything even with a light directed straight down it.
Interesting that the saddle tank uses the OEM fill point which means that both tanks will fill at the same time. This might change my opinion. Looking forward to your assessment. Thank you again.

This is a great call out and a major concern, I would gladly lose a couple of gallons just to tuck that angle back up under the frame more. Rock slides wont prevent a catastrophic loss of fuel with that squared edge pointed downward like that.

Also, what is the weight and material of the tank?

Here is a better picture when it was up on the lift. I assume it's made same as the land cruiser, which states it is 2mm aluminized steel. The LC 24 gal aux tank is listed at weighing 85lbs with no fuel, so I would assume this one is a tad less. I think ideally you'd run a skid plate over at least part of it there if you were going to be rock crawling, but I'm not concerned about it with my more moderate offroad use.

LRA tanks on the Jeep JL hangs down below the OEM tank to allow 17 gal capacity. A friend built a tank very similar but with stainless and more clearance which traded capacity to 12-13 gallons. The LRA tanks are carbon steel.

I’m guessing swapping fuel tanks wouldn’t mess with any future warranty claims. Does anyone know? I don’t want to store the OEM tank & have to revert back in the future for any issues. Also how come no one talks about the other options like FK or Brown Davis etc. I have no experience with Lexus/Toyota or aftermarket fuel tanks so maybe theres a quality history I’m not aware of

The LRA option is an aux tank so it doesn’t replace your OEM tank. I would imagine your warranty would be voided if the OEM tank is not there.

FK is made in China so people like me would be leery about getting something made there. Brown Davis makes a nice tank but getting it stateside is a problem since there isn’t a US distributor listed.

Ah I see now thanks for the feedback, yeah LRA looks like the move… wonder what the GX looks like with a spare on the rear 😅 not too interested in modifying exhaust
