I had to remove my overtrail roof rail on my passenger side, when taking out the six bolts from the factory I noticed there was a little bit of red on the bolt threads. The bolts weren't hard to remove, so I don't think it was thread locker. I put everything back the same way and torqued them down to spec. Each bolt have a little rubber washer from the factory.

In the Lexus service manual there is nothing listed in the install procedures about adding any sort of loctite or sealant when reinstalling. Same thing when reading the Land Cruiser roof rack install PDF, no mention of sealants or thread locks (https://www.landcruiserforum.com/attachments/pt970-60241inst-roof-rack-pdf.4207/):

But I read a bunch of stuff about people installing aftermarket racks using sealants, loctite, rtv, etc.

Has anyone else removed and re-installed their rails without using anything extra?

That red coating was a sealant …. You should buy new bolts and washers(those rubber filled washers like to tear and you don’t see it till you completely slip the washer off the screw) and retorque everything to spec… cheap insurance for something that might be big later

Thanks! Do the new bolts come with that sealant on them already or is there a pace I can buy that? I worried about using loctite because I want to be able to remove the rail again in the future to potentially install a first edition roof rack.

I’m pretty sure they do. I did the roof rail delete and the bolts came with the same coating on them … also worth noting that you can probably get away with the silicon and RTV way of sealing but I have no experience with that
