đź’¸ The 'official' I put my deposit down list...

I put my deposit of $3K down on December 26 for an OT at my local MD Lexus dealer. I was informed yesterday of the following:

I want to let you know that we've decided to mark up the GX since production will be lighter than expected.

Here is the pricing

Luxury +1995
Luxury plus +2995

Overtrail +2995
Overtail plus +4995

Premium and plus +995

I am disappointed that they have decided to markup all the GX models, but I am still keeping my reserved spot on their list.
That's terrible. If I were in your shoes, I would ask for my deposit back and find a dealer that will sell at MSRP. I'm on the list for OT+ and it's already expensive enough without an additional $5k. This isn't like covid times. We have options.

Put my deposit down here in calgary. I ordered a 2025 Overtrail plus in incognito grey with black roof as I’m hoping there may be a hybrid option. Unsure if I will end up getting hybrid but would be nice to try them both before buying

I put a deposit down on June 15th at Stevinson Lexus. What's frustrating, is that it was before they had the official deposit page setup.

The original sales person I worked with is no longer there. So I contacted them a few weeks ago to ask where I'm at on "The list". The sales manager said he'd look into it. I followed up. Still nothing. Naturally I'm wondering if the sales guy who I made the deposit with in June even made note of it. Sounds like many of you know exactly where you're at on the list. I'm yet to receive any communication.

I thought of going with Stevenson, but I have not heard great things about them the last few years. My deposit is with Greenwood Village Lexus , although I’ve not worked with any Lexus dealership before. I am also super late to the party and just put it down a few weeks ago. I think I’m number 140. I have a 2024 vehicle already so I am definitely happy with the wait for a 2025 or even later. I imagine this will be a keeper for quite some time for me.

I've been told there's no deposits yet?! I have a dealer that will call me when the cars arrive, so maybe different dealers do different things? Also, I looked up GX sales: the average sales per year (if I lump the prior 5 years together) is about 30,000 cars per year. This is not a small number, and the GX was already outselling Defender's annual volume of just over 20,000 cars (US). If Lexus sends 33,000+ that will leave some extra to build inventory.

A Texas Lexus Dealership Is Marking Up A 2024 GX Two Months Before It Arrives

The dealer doesn’t expect the GX until late March or early April and they’re already planning to sell it for over $100,000.

Markups are like an infestation of the car market that no one wants to get rid of. Or an STD. Either way they’re bad. You know it and I know it. But like the “Fast and Furious” movies, they keep happening. We’ve now reached a point where dealers are marking up cars they don’t even have yet. Take a Dallas area Lexus dealer who’s planning to markup the all-new GX when it hits their lot.

Now remember, Lexus dealers don’t even have the 2024 GX yet. If you do a search on any car-buying site, you’ll find plenty of stock of the outgoing generation of the GX; there’s even some brand-new 2022 models sitting around. But there are no ’24s yet.

Just how wild? Using the brief description provided in the listing, A 2024 GX 550 Luxury starts at $77,250 including destination. The Eminent White Pearl paint is another $500. Just with these two options you’re at $77,750. Without knowing any other options, this dealer is charging a markup of $27,250.

What bothers me about all of this is just how sketchy this whole thing is. There are just two Lexus dealerships in the Dallas area, and according to our resident car buying expert Tom McParland, both are pretty good, so much so that it would be weird if one of them were behind this. While it’s not strange to post new cars for sale on Craigslist, the vagueness of this could point to this being the work of a rogue salesperson or sales manager trying to get the drop on some unsuspecting buyer who just has to have the new GX before anyone else.

The unknown individual posted the anticipated markup on Dallas’s Craiglist of all places. In the sparse listing, it says the dealer has an Eminent White Pearl GX 550 with Palomino (tan/brown) interior coming in late March or early April. Selling price? A cool $105,000, a wild markup.

Cannot believe Lexus Dealerships would do this! They should sell at MSRP and Lexus Corp., should be suppling more inventory to help profits. (Not Highway Robbery!!) That's just greed on the Stealership/Management.

$1000 refundable in January for a Premium, Nori Green, Saddle interior, cold weather package. Central Pennsylvania.
Did the dealer ask for these specifics when you placed the deposit? Or was it through a website?

I did my deposit so early it was before the web portal had been created. The dealer emailed me an electronic invoice.

I was promptly contacted from my local dealer after building the GX550 on the Lexus website. I was emailed an "OUT OF STOCK VEHICLE PURCHASE FORM", where I could be as general, or specific, as I chose. I included a $1000 refundable deposit. Seemed to be an everyday experience on their end. They were told by Lexus to expect deliveries beginning in March. The dealer also explained that they won't add additional cost items, but to expect crap to be added at the port, which they have no control over.

Thanks for the info. I think I was just too early and my deposit was essentially handled via text message (sans the actual invoice that was emailed).

I put a deposit down months ago, but about a month ago I got a call that the deposits were being refunded due to a change in ownership. They would keep my name and contact me when cars start to become available. I received a check in the mail for my deposit.

I was contacted this week about cars coming in. The first question was how much over MSRP was I willing to pay? He said the first two sold at $30k over and that I would need to pay $25-$30k. I laughed and said I can’t pay that kind of money. Unbelievable. I knew it would suck, but that’s crazy. Guess I’ll keep looking or wait till all the rich kids get their toys. I guess allocation is another word for highest bidder. Way to go Lexus, guess I’ll never own one after all.

just find another dealer.

just find another dealer.
or wait a year. IMO at $85k+ these are pricey luxury buys. do I want one? sure, but I can buy a family SUV for $60k, so for the price point these will be at, eventually, there will be enough supply to match demand. I think the older model GX is out there at MSRP, and I think these will be there at some point too. I think Defender - which came out to even more fan fare and expectation than this GX - is now at MSRP. The other likely outcome is that when LC is back on the Toyota lot, folks turned off by GX pricing may be tempted to just go for the LC instead. The GX is out first and it's getting all the light -but ultimately $85k SUV buyers are desirable customers.

WOW ! $100K for a GX. LOL you can get so many other vehicles in that price range.

I have two deposits in, one at a dealer in PA and one in the DC area. I ended up buying another vehicle, and Bobby Rahal gave me no hassle at all about refunding my money and I'm awaiting the check. Still waiting to hear back from Pohanka after leaving two messages. FYI Bobby Rahal is only taking deposits for PA folks.
