Undercoating for winter climates

Have a feeling we’re in for a biblical winter. Toyota not being known for great rust protection I decided to stack the deck.

The ACF-50 is a great tip because of its reported ability to fix existing rust, not just prevent new rust. So it seems perfect for dealing with a rig that wasn't thoroughly treated when new (like my 4Runner). I'm having trouble getting in to my nearest Krown shop, where I had mine done for the first time last November after 3 years of ownership. So this looks like a great interim step until I can get another full professional coating. Thanks again for posting it.

You bet and agreed on the 4Runner needing all the help it can get on rust prevention. I'm living the same dream with my son's 23 Tacoma😉

I inadvertently got some on the stainless exhaust and noticed some light burn off fumes but went away quickly. Many do use it on the exhaust without issue. I’d stay away from the cats though.

I'm a fan of Corrosion Free, similar to Krown but thicker and no solvents. Any oil based treatment works well as an antirust treament (FF, WW, Krown, CRC etc)

FYI ACF50 MSDS looks like it's oil & a bit mineral spirits

and Corrosion Free is just oil

Here in upstate, NY they spread a lot of rock salt on the roads during the winter. As I plan to keep my expensive OT for a good number of years (probably my last vehicle), I am planning to have it undercoated/rust proofed. There's a Ziebart shop in town and a LINE-X dealer 1/2 hr away. I've not had experience with either one and am asking for your experiences/thoughts about them before I get it sprayed. TYIA.

Ziebart & Line-X are terrible for rust proofing, these types of undercoatings actually promote rust over the long term.

Go for something oil based and respray annually or every couple of years. The brand doesn't matter as much as the quality of application so try and find a shop with a good reputation or DIY. Krown/Corrosion Free is popular up here, Fluid Film/Woolwax seem more popular in the US.
