What’s the deal with dashcams?

So this thing has cameras everywhere, can show you what you are driving over like the car is invisible, and yet I can’t just plug in a thumb drive to have it record?

Then you need to buy a dashcam and have a cable hang down? Or somehow you can take apart the rear view mirror to access power?

How are others addressing this?

Like the title says, what's the deal with dashcams? Why do people want these ugly boxes on their windshields, recording everything they do?

I have a a Toyota/Lexus OEM camera that I was planning on removing from my 550. I've seen it installed on either side of the review mirror, depending on preference. It is intersting with all the cameras installed why they just didn't intergrate one automatically.
