Just how well should the wireless charger work in a brand new 2025 OT+? Even without a phone case an hour long drive with the phone in the charger cradle only produces a minimal recharger. Is that as good as it gets?

Same. I drove across FL and was surprised at how little charge I got.

Wireless CarPlay + Spotify + Apple Maps navigation: it barely keeps the phone from losing battery. If I need to charge the battery I plug it in.

I don't think it's the GX as much as I think all wireless charging is kinda mid.

I have little use for it. I want my phone where I can see and use it. Placement of the wireless charger is useles, and as everyone knows, it doesn't charge very well. I'm ok - none of my vehicle wireless chargers have been any good, and I just use it for needed storage space.

Here's my 3-d print version with mag charger. The 3-d file is uploaded

I am old (68) and am in the middle of my first real road trip with the GX550 (Knoxville, TN to Las Vegas, NV). I agree that the QI charger does heat up my iPhone (in a case), but not dangerously. I place the phone on the charger as soon as we leave each morning fully charged. I use Apple CarPlay all day (one day was over 10 hours). I prefer using Google Maps over the built-in Lexus navigation because it keeps north at top by default. We also utilize Waze when traffic issues arise. And I like being able to hear and respond to texts and calls hands free.
At the end of the day my phone is still pretty much fully charged

I've had good success with getting the phone charge after letting it sit on the charger for 10-15 minutes. Percent gain is about 10%. My case is a thin TPU.

I think position on the charger matters most - the better the charger is coupled to the phone, the better/more charge is delivered. (2 cents worth) :)
You are correct.

Here's why positioning matters:
  • Coil Alignment:
Wireless chargers use electromagnetic induction to transfer energy. The phone's charging coil needs to be properly aligned with the charger's coil to maximize power transfer.

  • Distance and Interference:
Thick phone cases, metal objects, or other electronic devices can interfere with the magnetic field and reduce charging efficiency.

  • Optimal Contact:
The phone should make direct contact with the charger, especially when the charger has a dedicated charging area.

  • Charger Design:
Some chargers may have designated areas for optimal charging, so following the manufacturer's instructions is also recommended.

  • Centering:
If the charger doesn't have a specific charging area, aim for the center of the phone to be aligned with the center of the charger's coil.
