Gas Can suitable for storage inside (1 Viewer)

Is there a gas can available that has 3-5 gallon capacity that would be ok to put in the rear of the GX for emergency use off-road? I don't have a roof rack, and don't anticipate needing gas, but wouldn't mind having some in case. I haven't tried carrying gas inside the vehicle, and assume it isn't a great idea, in part because I would imagine there isn't a good way to avoid fumes. I may be wrong however.

I mean I have transported gas in the back of an SUV before… it’s not inherently dangerous it just starts to stink on a longer period of time.

But for a couple hours you won’t even notice the smell with the climate control on ( it’s changes in temp that lead to smells the can vents ).

Yes, the small gas tank is an issue. We plan to tow our travel trailer up to Alaska late May 2025 and range is something I have concerns about. One member added tanks to his trailer but that isn't a solution for our rig. So far the best I have come up with is 5 gallon jerry can on a roof rack but there has to be something better.

I have two Wedco metal gas cans, 10-liters in size (2.6 US gallons). They have NEVER leaked on me, inside in the cargo bay or outside on the roof rack. I did replace the rubber gaskets a few years ago as they will dry out and shrink and crack over time. I've probably had these cans for nearly 20 years. I just searched online and it appears that Wedco is now Wavian. A google search showed: The Wavian cans available today are made in the same facility as the Wedco cans were, and are identical in every respect except for a brand stamping on the side.

P.S. I went off roading in Moab with a bunch of Land Rover buddies years ago. Everyone laughed at my little 10-liter cans. Until one of the guys in a Defender 90 used all of his 5-gallon can and then ran out of gas and needed a couple gallons to make it to the gas station. I look at it like this....2 or 2.5 gallons in trucks like these is about 25 miles that I won't have to walk.

I purchased two Rotopax 3 gal containers that will attach to the window panels for travels to the Yukon and Northwest territories. Will probably be used in Arizona, Utah and the likes as well. I picked up the vehicle yesterday and it showed a range of 276 miles. There will be lots of stops with that range.

A friend of a friend was carrying gass in a plastic fuel jug in the carpeted rear area of his SUV. The gas jug ignited severely burning the back of his head and shoulders, and destroyed the vehicle. The best guess was that the jug slid on the carpet and caused a static spark. Be careful...

A proper Jerry can will never have that problem. We’ve all had experience with the cheap shitty plastic gas jugs that leak everywhere.

I figure towing the trailer I'll be averaging 10 mpg driving ups to Alaska so the big question, two 10 litre or two 20 litre cans. Leaning to the 20 litre but concerned about getting them off & on the roof.

I wouldn’t recommend carrying gas inside the passenger cabin for roadtrips, but I’ve had Wavian 10L and 20L cans inside while camping & off-roading

What I’ll do is: keep the cans empty until I’m about to get off-road, then fill them up and make sure they’re secure. Then, when I get back on the highway (and within range of gas stations), I’ll empty them in my gas tank.

What did you use to keep the cans stable in your trunk (if at all)? I'm shopping around for some cans to carry in my trunk and I'm thinking I'll need something to keep them from tipping over in my trunk. Granted, I have the OEM rubber cargo mat, I'm thinking I'll need something else.

I'm one of those nerds that lashes everything down in my cargo bay, unless I've packed so much that it becomes a game of tetris to fit everything in. But with gas cans, I always lash them down. I haven't carried gas cans in my GX yet, but if/when I do I'd lash one on the left and one on the right with ratchet straps tied down to the stock anchor points. Then with stuff like cooler & Pelican cases and duffel bags, etc. crammed in there everything is secure. And if you have the misfortune to roll over, at least the cans will stay lashed down.

I hope Long Range America and other MFRs release their new fuel tanks soon. The range on the GX as is truly sucks.
