GX550 Real World MPG

Just returned from a 1600 mile road trip, was pleasantly surprised with the MPG. Calculated by odometer and gallons at the pump.

Had been getting low 14s around town in short trips for the first 1000 miles. My prior V8 4runner got a little over 12 in similar driving.

MPG per tank for the trip:
21.15 - mostly freeway
21.30 - mostly freeway
19.03 - slow scenic driving (30-55mph), several stops
22.66 - slow scenic driving, few stops
18.25 - slow scenic driving, lots of stops
22.02 - mostly freeway
19.81 - mostly freeway, hilly and curvy

I have a P+ with stock 20s and Geolanders (for now).

Couple of interesting things I noticed during the trip:
Adaptive cruise will slow down automatically in turns even with no car in front.
The black plastic in the trunk scratches really easily, zipper on a suitcase dug in pretty well. The plastic in my old 4Runner held up a lot better.
Truck gets HOT parked in the sun. Sun visor on the windshield helped a lot. Considering tint to help with that.
Wireless phone charger is pretty much useless.
S-Flow turns itself back on , but doesn't seem to be consistent.

Photo in the redwoods, because why not.

For the past couple of weeks I've been road tripping in the OT+ across California, Oregon, Idaho and Wyoming (mostly Yellowstone).
Current odometer reading since the start of the trip is 1926 miles.
Average mpg across this trip has been about 21 mpg.

My highest was driving from Bend, OR to Vale, OR on US-26. I was able to hit about 27 mpg over 261 miles! I guess it helped that it was mostly downhill :-D

Right! Best I’ve done in my OT+is 18. Are you guys driving downhill both ways? 😀
I'm with you on this. If I'm flying down the highway at 80-85 MPH my MPG would be 13 or lower. I think the vehicles getting better MPG are non OT or OT+ vehicles. Any modification to the vehicle and you can forget about seeing anything north of 17 MPG.

Nope. Stock OT+ with AC blasting away.

You got a good one then. I never saw 18 MPG during the short time I had my stock vehicle.
I think I did! No hood flutter, HVAC works great and blows hard, seat ventilation and massage work strong, etc. Knock on wood, but I just don't seem to have the issues a lot of people are having.

Finished up my road trip in my 2024 OT+
3360 miles across California, Oregon, Idaho, Yellowstone, Utah, Nevada and back to California.
Average is about 20.2 mpg. Speeds were averaging about 70-75 mph with some 80-85 mph stretches in places.

Total mileage on the GX OT+ is 15400 in total.
Also picked up another windshield chip + 8 inch crack along the way :-(

FYI - here is one year's worth of gas mileage data for my Lux+ (no mods)......
  • Location: StL, MO (4 seasons)
  • Usage: 75% City, 25% Hwy
  • Maintenance: performed one early oil change ~2K, otherwise following regular maintenance schedule.
  • Total Fuel Cost: $4K (premium)/1yr
  • Summary: despite the below expectations ML 21 Speaker system and a few other new model quirks (howling luggage rack, thin/shaky hood, weak cooling/heating seats, retarded cooling box (yes, retarded!) and lousy mileage, I still LOVE the vehicle.

Last tank averaged a combo city/hwy average of 20.4 mpg for a total trip range of 413 miles. Zero miles range remaining on gauge. Filled up and it took 20.4 gallons with me slow filling to it being visible near top of the filler neck. 2025 OT+ stock as i am waiting for my Rays wheels to come in. Which they say will be begining of next year!

i understand the MPG is not the greatest but it is pretty much inline with everything in its class or better. for reference my MPG is ~2 lower than the stock LC250 in city and ~1 in Hwy on the same routes. bronco, Jeep wrangler JL are worse and Defender is a bit better.

Wanted to provide an update after 5000 miles for my 2025 Premium +. Only mods installed are window visors. Usage: 80% City, 20% Hwy
At purchase the reading for trip miles available on full was 280 miles. After driving 5000 miles it now reads 360 at fill ups. Not fantastic but certainly an improvement.
Haven't taken any trips to determine readings after extended highway miles are counted in. Regardless, we are happy with the GX and don't plan to trade or sale. Hoping to get over 100,000 miles!

Took the stock gx OT on the freeway for a 40 mile loop. Going 65mph , 29.7 on the way there and 22 coming back . That’s 26mpg combined. As for city driving on I’m getting 2 mpg less compared to stock lc, averaging 15
I live on high elevation and driving to work is a 6 mile route with many lights , going down to work I get 19-24mpg and the drive back 12-15 depending on how many red lights I encounter with total city average around 16 . I’d say my numbers are on par with motor trend 75mph test which returned 21mpg
